How many hours do your kids sleep?!

I have a 3 year old (turned 3 a few days ago) and a 5 month old.

3 year old naps about 1-1.5 hrs in the day and sleeps 8.5 hours overnight (might wake 1 time depending).

5 month old sleeps about 3-4 hours in the day and about 10-11 interrupted hours overnight.

Both kids seem to sleep far less than friends with similar aged LOs and I’m so tired. The 3 year old used to be so much worse with a LOT more night waking!

Could you cut your 3 year olds sleep to see if he sleeps more hours. Give him maybe 20 minutes instead? 8.5 over night, isnt very much.

Gopd luck in trying to sleep more

3 year old - no nap usually (odd 10 mins in the car), 11-12 hours at night. Doesn't usually wake in the night

15 month old - generally has either 1 x 1.5 hour nap or 2 x 45 min naps in the day. Sleeps 12-13 hours at night (2/3 wake ups).

Forgot to add- 3 yrsr old used to nap for hours in the day and sleep crap at night. We cut his nap to 30 mins.... Was a tough few days but worth it. Significant improvement to length and quality of night sleep. He then transferred to no nap by himself.

I have much older children. 10 year old 9.75 hours. 6 year old 10.75 hours. Yes, I can be that accurate, I can predict exactly what time they'll wake up depending on what time they went to bed.

Our daughter is 5 in March 2018 she has not had an afternoon nap for about 2 1/2 years now but even when she did she would sleep at least 12 hours through the night and still does (with the exception of a toilet visit every now and then) 6pm -6:30am most nights. Black out blind really helped in her room though!

My 3 yr old no longer has a nap and sleeps 12 hours at night. Up until 3 she was having a 2 hour nap. When she turned 3 she started to be difficult at night so we stopped the nap. That seemed to work for us. Occasionally she chooses to have a short nap in the afternoon if we’ve had a busy few days.

My 14 month old naps 1.5-2 hours and sleeps 12-13 hours at night.

4 year old sleeps 730/8pm til 6/630 am. Hasnt napped for years.

1 year old has 2-3 hours in the day and sleeps 7-5 / 730-530

Afreshstartplease · 29/11/2017 05:32

Oh and 8 and 9 year old sleep roughly 9pm til 630/7/730/8

Cantchooseaname · 29/11/2017 05:38

18 mo old. 7.30pm-5am, then 1.5/ 2hr nap. Night sleep doesn't feel anywhere near long enough. Usually ignored til 6 if just singing / playing in cot, but coughing this morning.

5 year old between 10 and 12 hours

applecharlotte · 29/11/2017 06:35

6yo - 10 hours

confusedandemployed · 29/11/2017 06:39

4yo - 11-12 hours.
I remember distinctly when we gave up her nap. She was about 2y4mths and had always gone down well around 6.30pm. When we realised she was taking up to 90mins to go to sleep at night we cut out her nap. Just did it cold turkey and she was fine. Back to 7-7 within a day or so.

HariboBrenshnio · 29/11/2017 07:08

4 year old - no nap. Sleep 11-11.5 hours at night.

Nearly 2 year old - sleeps 2.5-3 hours in the day, 11-12 over night.

Your 3 year old isn't getting enough sleep. They need 11-12 hours a night. I'd drop the nap and aim for 7-7 sleep.

A2014 · 29/11/2017 07:55

Thanks for the replies. I know he isn’t getting enough sleep but he (really) wants that nap. It doesn’t matter the length. Can be 15 minutes and he will still not sleep at night. It takes ages (generally between 1-1.5 hours) to get him to sleep. If he wakes in the morning it’s hit and miss if he wants to sleep any more. I spent 45 minutes this morning trying to get him back to sleep again (he was tired for sure) but then the baby woke up.

Think maybe cutting out his nap and trying for a longer overnight sleep may be the way forward. The few times we have done that unintentionally he has woken up much more overnight though!

DS, nearly 3, just dropping his hour nap in the day (or like yours OP, it'll take him ages to go down at night). But he manages 10 hours at night usually.

DD, 9 months, usually 2 naps a day totalling 1-2 hours, sleeps 11 hours at night, with usually some interruptions (but no feeds, woohoo!)

They're all different - some genuinely seem to function fine on less sleep - which is a pain if you're the parent!

Desmondo2016 · 29/11/2017 22:02

My 11 month old sleeps 13 hours at night and has either one nap of around an hour or 2 shorter ones depending what we are doing. She's always been so awesome at night I've been slack with naps and we just freestyle them.

Greylilypad · 29/11/2017 23:42

Our 3 year old was a terrible sleeper, and found it v hard to get her down at night. She was still napping and really seemed to need the nap. But we cut it because of the issues with night time sleep. There was definitely an adjustment period - a good few grumpy days, and overtired bedtimes and a few falling asleep at 5pm (we would wake her immediately usually to major grumpiness).
But it was worth it, the initial teething problems resolved after a few weeks (the first few days were the worst but it was probably a few weeks before she was consistent). She now goes up at 7.30, generally asleep by 7.45/8 and wakes at 7.30/45. It is such a relief. Bedtime is much easier and all much happier!

Greylilypad · 29/11/2017 23:44

Apart from the fact that we now have a 5 month old who has recently decided sleeping is not for him Sad
