Are you using a sleepyhead at night?

I'm curious as at my baby group today a person was horrified I was. I know sleep positioners have been banned but not the sleepyhead. As far as I am aware nothing new has come to light.

This is something I was recommended to help DS sleep so am suprised its been so controversial out and about. They also appear to still be selling like hotcakes.

Are you using one?

Yes. I used the first size one and upgraded to the bigger one about a month ago.

NickMyLipple · 25/11/2017 04:38

Not currently but I will be when my baby is born!

Jellybabie3 · 25/11/2017 04:58

Ok thanks. My ds sleeps his side in it propped up with a cellular at tummy level. Literally the only way he will sleep.

The issue was surrounding 'sleep positioners' as babies didn't have the same freedom to move and I think Sleepyhead got caught up in the furore. Each to their own on whether they use them or not but I'm v happy with mine

mommybear1 · 25/11/2017 06:00

Yes. My LO was premature and didn't like anything that was not enclosed/provided a shell around him. We have used the sleepyhead none stop and it's been great my understanding is that the issues raised do not apply to the sleepyhead.

PeachesandPie · 25/11/2017 06:24

We bought a sleepyhead last week for our non sleeping 3 week old and the last 5 nights she has slept in it like a dream. I know a lot of people using them overnight. I was worried about using it after the recent press but having seen her in it I don't think there is a risk.

Cariad1988 · 25/11/2017 06:27

I used one, I also had the banned one that came to light as unsafe Confused they are completely different. They can't roll on to their front on the sleepyhead like they can in others x

Bue · 25/11/2017 06:41

No one buys a sleepyhead for anything other than nighttime sleep. So yes loads of people are using them.

HandbagFan · 25/11/2017 08:12

We have two and didn’t use them overnight. We were lucky that DS slept well and didn’t need it overnight. Instead while he was a baby he slept in it during the day time in the lounge so we could watch him and be with him as per SIDS advice.

Now he’s a toddler we take it on UK breaks with us to put inside travel costs as they tend to be quite hard!

welshweasel · 25/11/2017 08:13

Yes we did, and I would do again if I have another.

Jellybabie3 · 25/11/2017 08:16

Great thanks all. Think I was just after some reassurance I wasnt the only one. Lady literally gasped like I was torturing him or something. I did make an informed decision when buying so just wondered if I had missed something to cause her reaction. He has never slept better since sleeping in it.

Not using one. DS generally sleeps well for a 3 week old baby in that he obviously wakes up every 3-4 hours which is what he’s designed to do but other than that he’s pretty good. I’m too mean to spend £200 on something like this.

FortheloveofJames · 25/11/2017 09:23

We’ve used sleepyhead from birth with no issues and I must admit I’ve never been worried about my wee guy in there. In the beginning he would only sleep on his side so like a PP we used a blanket tucked up to make sure he didn’t fall on his front. Now he sleeps fine on his back. He’s now in his own room using it in his cot.

Don’t worry about what anyone else says and keep doing what works for you. Things like this are part of the reason I don’t like baby groups. We’re all just mummas trying to do our best, don’t need judgemental comments from others.

chocolateorangeowls · 25/11/2017 09:27

I used one until LO grew out of it around 5 months. I found some people had very opinions without being very well informed!

mybreastsarentbest · 25/11/2017 09:32

I don’t use one because they don’t meet the safe sleep guidelines. They’re not marketed for co-sleeping here (Canada) but I find some of their marketing pretty disingenuous overall. Here’s an interesting blog post covering it: www.babybargains.com/dockatot-review-not-recommended/ (same product and company, different name in North America).

I know everyone has to make their own judgement calls on safe sleep guidelines vs actually getting sleep, but the guidelines are quite clear: on the back, clear cot, firm mattress, same room as parents. Anything else is a departure from that and each parent can decide if he or she is comfortable with that.

crazycatlady5 · 25/11/2017 13:51

People will be horrified by something you do in parenting, just the way it is. If it’s working and you feel it’s safe, who cares?

crazycatlady5 · 25/11/2017 13:52

Some people are horrified by me cosleeping - I’m quite happy to tell them where to go Grin

Ceesadoo · 25/11/2017 18:58

I don't use a sleepy head but I use a cocoonanest which is kind of similar I think x

pulpi · 25/11/2017 19:10

Used one from birth to 8 months with DS1 and will be using it again with DC2. Not that it solved the 4-6 wakings per night once the teething started at 4.5 months and continued to 11 months!

CaptainsCat · 25/11/2017 19:15

I believe they are unsuitable for ‘unsupervised’ sleep, so if you’re asleep too I would say not really safe. I wouldn’t use one, but if your baby won’t sleep without it’s a judgement call isn’t it, like letting a baby sleep on their front or side if they prefer it.
