Blankets

Hi there, my little one is 4 weeks now. I am following the guidance for safe sleep and their arms are out, with blankets tucked in beneath their arm pits. Our room is becoming cold during the night as the temperature drops, is it safe to tuck their arms in but still leave the covers no higher than their shoulders?

Are you using a baby sleeping bag at all?

crazycatlady5 · 18/11/2017 11:58

I would say no as if the blanket rode up towards their face they couldn’t pull it away.

dementedpixie · 18/11/2017 12:00

No I wouldn't as their armpits help keep the cover away from their face. Long sleeves and mits if you need them will keep them warm. I used a sleeping bag for mine

skippybobobo · 18/11/2017 12:05

No I wouldn't .
If there over 8 pounds 8 you can use baby sleeping bags .
Or for keeping arms warm use long sleeve vest plus a sleep suit . Doubly layers over the arms or a fleece sleep suit

DandySeaLioness · 18/11/2017 12:31

you can also get sleeping bags with arms

dementedpixie · 18/11/2017 12:32

Don't think the ones with arms are supposed to be used for overnight sleeping in case of overheating

DandySeaLioness · 18/11/2017 13:10

@dementedpixie

This is what I had in mind, basically a regular sleep suit with just the arms padded so you that on and then the sleeping bag.

DandySeaLioness · 18/11/2017 13:10

so you put that on*

welshweasel · 18/11/2017 13:17

Use a sleeping bag. Their arms and face will be cool, so long as their chest/back are warm that fine. In winter when the heating was off I used to put DS in a short sleeved vest, babygrow and 2.5 tog sleeping bag and he'd be plenty warm enough.

Lovingtyrells · 18/11/2017 18:39

You can use a swaddle that zips up and covers their arms if they like sleeping with their arms up

JES12 · 18/11/2017 19:42

Thanks so much everyone for your replies!!!!!

Mothercare do sleeping bags which I think are called snoozies. Lovely quality - like gro bags but they can be used for babies under 8lb 8. You'll need to check but think they're suitable from around 7lb/7lb 7.

piggleiggle83949 · 18/11/2017 20:12

In this weather I dress the baby in a long sleeve vest, thick baby grow with socks underneath, and use a sleeping bag. On extra cold nights I put a blanket over the sleeping bag.

Gannetseatfish · 21/11/2017 08:05

Our babies are spoilt! We put an oil filler radiator on low to keep the room from getting too cold. DD currently wears a long sleeved vest and cotton sleep suit plus 2 woolen blankets below armpits tucked in. Without the heater she gets too cold.

Gannetseatfish · 21/11/2017 08:08

I should add, we are in the very far north of Scotland so it gets very cold here!

Balancingact12 · 21/11/2017 08:25

I know it would be a bit more expensive but could you set the heating to come on for a bit overnight? That’s what we do for ours (3 under 3), before them dh and I used to just brave being frozen getting up in the morning but I have softened since having kids it seems Hmm
