DS1 will be 3 next month. Having shared a room with his little brother for around 4 months, and sleeping in a cot, we recently moved him into his own room and into a bed.

The early morning wakings have been going on for about 2/2.5 months though, so they aren’t just to do with the clocks going back, or the room and bed change.

DS is at daycare 3 days a week and at home we roughly follow the daycare routine for meals etc. No nap during the day in general.

Breakfast @ 6.30/7
Snack @ 9.30
Lunch @ 12
Snack @ 3.30
Dinner @ 6
Bath, stories & bed @ 7/7.30
With the intention of waking up at 6/6.30

The pipe dream of a 7-7 sleeper is long gone from our aspirations but for ages, like a year and a half, he was happily doing 10.5/11 hours a night regularly. We had a blip where he was taking ages to go to sleep at night so we dropped the daytime nap and that fixed that issue.

He rarely wakes up in the night, though we do have the odd week or two where he has a run of nightmares or wakes up thirsty.

But now he is waking up every morning at around 5am and this morning it was 4!!

Why why why???? This morning I can put it down to a possible tummy upset, but not the rest of the last couple of months! Any thoughts of him being hungry are belied by the fact that he never really eats breakfast, although it’s always provided. He might have a bit of toast and a half a banana on a good day. He tends to eat more at the 9.30 snack time.

I think my gut instinct is that he’s permanently overtired, but adding in naps or putting him to bed earlier does little to help.

Here’s my thoughts, and I would welcome any suggestions or comments!! Should we move to a later bedtime? Like aim for 8pm rather than 7pm?

Sorry for the long post, but I’m a tired mum at the end of a long tether here!
