Did your baby start sleeping better when you stopped breastfeeding?

Hi ya, I have a 6 month old ds who is waking up 3 times or so in the night and then wide awake at 6am.
I aonly feed him once at about 3ish but I am thinking as soon as I stop bfing he might sleep better as he won't be able to smell me close by?
maybe not... please let me have your thoughts or recommendations.

If you only feed him once in the night,I think that is pretty good going actually.
I only ever considered breastfeeding for my kids but I know that quite a lot of MNers have written about dropping b/feeding in the hope that their baby would sleep and finding that it didn't work.
Something to think about eh?

I was happy to wake up and feed them in the night until they were 1.

I'm with moondog - I can't remember exactly when I stopped feeding ds in the night, but it was closer to 12 months than 6. Not that he woke to feed every night - he started sleeping through regularly at about 7 months, but then started waking more often a couple of months later. After a couple of months of that, we decided he was taking the mick, and I stopped feeding him at night.

I'm still breastfeeding him twice a day (he's now 22 months), but generally if he wakes at night DH goes in to him instead of me, so that he doesn't ask for milk. (I work full time, so DS's morning and evening feeds constitute a significant portion of the time I spend with him on a weekday - don't know if that makes the mummy = milk connection stronger for us...)

if they do sleep better i think it's only because the formula feed sits heavier in their stomach

no - I fed DS2 until 13months and I was getting up in the night to feed him util them. After I stopped, DH was getting up inj the night to comfort DS2 so at least I slept better when I stopped feeding

gegs73 · 12/04/2007 14:01

Yes mine did. I found I was able to get in a better routine with him during the day when I dropped breast feeding which helped him to be more settled during the night and sleep through.

No, mine slept through fine when breastfeeding

As someone said before, the reason more bottlefed babies sleep through is because formula milk is much harder for babies to digest so they feel fuller for longer. My daughter is exclusivly breastfed and from the age of 6wks slept through for 2mths (even managed a few 12hr stretches) but then milk wasn't enough and wanted solids so started waking up
