This is ds2... my god he's been awake since 7.30 am this morning and I kid you not he hasn't slept (well apart from 15 minutes at about midday)... is this normal??

Everytime i put him down in his moses basket/ cot/ bouncy seat or under the gym he screams...

... as soon as i pick him up he stops and smiles etc and all is well...

... am sure he's not ill - no temp etc - am exclusively bfding and he seems to be feeding constantly at the mo...

... anyone else got any tips? How can he still be so wide awake?

Sounds like my ds2, just doesn't seem to need much sleep! When he was about that age he stayed awake a whole night and didn't sleep until about 7 the next morning, he still doesn't sleep much during the day now really.

i had a 10 day old who was awake for twelve hours on the trot.

OMG - how can i cope with the lack of sleep... people advise me to cat-nap during the day... but how do you do that when they're wide awake?

Oh I remember being SO shocked when ds1 did this. I'd read all the stuff that said 'newborns sleep all the time' and mine was awake all the time! He gradually started to sleep more often and for longer, and dd and ds2 were the same. Don;t worry about it, he'll sleep when he's tired. Have you got a sling? That used to coax mine to doze a bit, once I'd decided they needed a bit of sleep . Otherwise, just let him carry on.

Hi muppet, my DD was like this too - slept great at night but was often awake all day until 11pm. Cluster fed for hours in the evenings! She'd have occasional 5-15 min catnaps if I walked her in the pram but that was it. Bedtime gradually got earlier and earlier, and now at 4 months old she's going to bed at 7.30 pm and is just starting to have 30-90 min morning nap as well. I read on here about putting baby down for the first nap just two hours after she wakes up for the day, and that seemed to do the trick for us. My DD also hated being put down to begin with but gradually started to notice and reach out for toys in baby gym and was more content to be left after a while.

You get used to not sleeping I can't nap anyway as I have a 5 year old and a 3 year old as well. It's hard but doesn't last forever His sleeping is starting to improve, he's slept quite a bit today but he has a cold which might explain that.

And the cat nap/ sleep when your baby sleeps brigade clearly never had a second child! I used to go to bed after I'd put ds1 to bed and leave dd with dh. With ds2 who was bf, I used to take him to bed with me when the evening cluster feeding started and do it lying down so I could doze. It means you don't get to see your dh much but I was so ratty from the slep deprivation I don;t think he minded too much!

Great advice... thanks all - it's been 9 hours now and i've resigned myself to just go with it.

Am lucky that dd and ds1 are 9 and 7 respectively so at school all day... so the opportunity for a crafty nap is there... just that ds2 clearly has other ideas!

The sling idea is a good'un - will give it a go...

... this is such a rude awakening for me (forgive the pun)... dd and ds1 were such marvellous sleepers (like their mum )

... this one has clearly been sent to teach me a thing or two!

ive been having the same issues with ds now 8wks. He just doesn't seem to sleep much in the day but always goes to sleep between 8-9pm and despite waking for feeds sleeps til 7ish. Am i supposed to be making him sleep? so far im just guided by what he does, if he falls asleep i let him sleep but have noticed hes defnitely happier on gthe days when he does nap.

my other query is where do you put them to sleep during the day? i don't like the thought of him upstairs in hammock away from me. so far he's been sleeping in his chair or the pram.
