10 week baby won't sleep more than 30 minutes.

And this includes the night!

Our lovely baby is unable to sleep for more than 30 minutes unless held. She refuses the dummy and does not suck her thumb - if she could do this, I feel that she'd be able to sleep for longer stretches. She can sometimes self settle, but I am confused whether I should be trying harder with this. The books advocate self settling, yet also oppose sleep training. I cannot tell what the difference is between the two as both methods seem to rely on you leaving the baby to cry. Am I wrong in thinking this?

Baby will sleep at night if we co-sleep, but I cannot. I don't feel very safe doing this. I am so exhausted and tired. I have an older child and feel bad for her that I am too tired to meet her needs. Other half is great, but is not always around to help.

How can I help my baby to sleep for longer stretches, especially at night? Does anyone have any good suggestions?

Thank you.

I've been up for two hours with a ten month old that often wakes every 30 mins. I usually get fed up and co-sleep but I still don't get much because he's hanging off my boob all night. Not in a big bed tonight so not keen on keeping him in here with us.

Where is your LO sleeping - a Moses basket? You could try the pram carrycot (if safe for overnight - not all are)?

Firstly: have a coffee from me Brew
I can't say much about the night situation (DD did OK there), but during the day she also only slept for 25-30 min for ages. We tried every trick the books recommended, to no avail. At about 4! Months she suddenly started to have one or two longer naps every day up to an hour and a half. I think she just needed to get there on her own. Good luck with your little one!

No idea why my coffee changed into a star...

She sleeps in a Sleepyhead. We do occasionally get long naps if she falls asleep in the car. She hates the pram....she can manage only 5 minutes there and then starts to cry. Not even the motion of a pram will send her to sleep. I thought all babies love prams!

Silent reflux ? Sounds very familiar too my friends baby and she had to go to the doctors about 5 times before they started listening xx

Does she seem very gassy when she's lying on her back? DS was like this, he's 16 weeks now and heaps better. He started improving around 12 weeks as his digestive system matured.

Is it wind? I'm currently up with my windy baby

Massive focus on the dummy would be my suggestion.

My youngest didn't take to a dummy and had very disrupted and poor sleep in the early weeks as a result. I focused massively in getting the dumny accepted (she was my 4th child, so I knew the value in the dummy for good sleep).

It took a good month of relentless, all the time effort on my part until she finally "got" that she needed tp suck the dummy (rather than it sitying limply in her mouth) and it felt soothing.

I believe it is directly linked that within 1 week of accepting the dummy (at 7 weeks old) she started sleeping 11pm-7am uninterputed stretches at night.

I found an Amby Nest really helped with my refusnik sleepers.

I did wonder if she had an element of reflux, but then I noticed that she was absolutely fine when I brought her into bed with me and fed her laying down. She slept so well and even though I could hear some bubbles of wind in her tummy, it didn't cause her to stir or wake up.

So encouraging PressPaws that things started to change around 12 weeks. I've got less than 2 weeks to go. I'd be over the moon if we shared the same fate.

Fatedestiny - that's really interesting about the dummy. I guess we didn't persevere long enough with it in the early days. Her older sibling took the dummy straight away, so I had presumed that maybe DD2 was going to be a thumb sucker or didn't need the dummy. How wrong was I? Do you think 10 weeks is too old to learn how to use one??
