Dropping last nap - when? Anyone with a 3yo who still sleeps for a couple of hours?

DS1 was three last week and can now stay awake all day and not be too cross by bedtime as long as he has a nap a few times a week or when he's been to preschool in the morning.

He's more likely to wake up later in the evening after a bad dream if he hasn't had a nap.

I'll obviously keep him napping as long as he needs, but I wondered how old your children were when they dropped their last sleep as DS1's peers have largely stopped sleeping in the day.

He didn't sleep in the day on Friday, Saturday or Sunday and slept from 3-6 yesterday - went to sleep at 9 last night, which isn't massively early, I know, but slept till 7.30.

(Can I just say I'm in no way smug about DS1 still napping in the day and sleeping at night because I have DS "I only need 10 hours' broken sleep in any given 24-hour period" 2 to contend with...

I stopped put DS down for a nap when he turned 3, he was ready and could go through the day without. Having said that we are quite aware 3 months on, maybe once or twice a week he'll have a nap, of 1-2 hours. He'll definatly drop off if i was to drive the car 15 mins away.

with him in

DD1 was still having the occasional afternoon nap when she was in reception (just turned 4, only doing afternoons).

I brought tea time forward to 4.30 to keep her awake in the end, and dropped it before she had to go full time.

Mine kept her nap through age 3. She has just turned 4 in March. And sometimes she still gets sent off for an afternoon nap if she is misbehaving mid afternoon. (this is largely for my own sanity of course)

But, I get my kids up quite early so I think they are a bit sleep deprived at night so need a daytime nap. I do this so I can see them in the morning before I go to work. Besides, it gives the nanny a break during the day, so it works for us.

Eleusis, I think that's part of the reason DS1 still naps - he goes to bed fairly late as he doesn't get home when we're at work till 7ish. I'm not home till 8 three nights in the week either. He's usually in bed by 9pm though, often earlier. Doesn't necessarily go to sleep till later though... He did a running commentary of which Mr Men he was going to dream about the other night before he went to sleep - for about an hour, quite quietly, but very persistently "First I will dream about Mr Strong and when I have dreamt about Mr Strong, then I will dream about Mr Uppity and after I have dreamt about Mr Uppity, then I will dream about Mr Tickle..." and on and on and on

DS has mostly dropped the naps at nursery, but still tends to have them at the weekends at home, though not always. He's 3.3.

ooh HM well if you can fit that into your schedule I would let it go. It's only really an issue when school looms, which clearly it doesn't for a while.
FWIW my younger 2 both dropped their naps at 2 exactly, but both having been good at going to bed were suddenly lying awake in their cots and chatting for an hour or so, so that was the signal. They were both fine and would only have a sleep after that is extrememly tired after very busy days or ill of course.

My ds (3.2) still naps most afternoons for about 1.5 hours. He can survive without it, and does so happily if we're out for the day, but he's v tired and grumpy by 5-6ish. He sleeps 7.30pm - 7am still, so I'm not worrying.
