I heard from my MIL and her friends that they used to do this, with a rolled up towel to hold babies in place. This was before the SIDS advice on back to sleep, though.

MintChocChippyMinton · 07/04/2007 08:47

After DS1 was the worlds worst sleeper after being dutifully laid down on his back, i put DS2 and DD on their sides/front if necessary and they slept beautifully, even if i didn't from the worry LOL

Trinityrhino · 07/04/2007 08:49

so I'm not the only one then

No, not alone, i even told my (lovely) HV what i was doing .
DS1 would not go down to sleep on his own until he was about 3, the other two put themselves to sleep from the start, BUT it is a big risk...

chocolateface · 07/04/2007 09:08

Yep! I put my newborns,to sleep on their sides, swaddled, in mosses basket.

ellceeell · 07/04/2007 09:26

ds is 20 - when he was a baby the HV instruction (not advice in those days!) was to put him to sleep on his side.
dd1 is 17. The HV advice was to put her to sleep on her front.
dd2 is 5. Following the current advice then, I put her to sleep on her back.
I don't think any of them were particularly happy or unhappy, but I was always convinced I was getting wrong somehow.

hercules1 · 07/04/2007 09:27

Yes, cant remember what age but she slept much better. Didnt do it all the time though.

Mum2FunkyDude · 07/04/2007 09:29

Ds would only sleep on his side, we just made a point to make sure he is turned to his other side after every feed, that way he was comfortable and I was sure he won't get a flat head. He disliked sleeping on his back until he was about 6 months old.

And we use rolled up towels to pack him in, just make sure the one in front starts lower down on the tummy, that way he can't get it in his face.

Trinityrhino · 07/04/2007 09:30

I've only done it about 6 times in her life. After she has been hard to settle and when finally asleep on my shoulder I just didn't want to then put her down on her back cause she isn't often comfy like that and I wanted her to actually get some sleep.

same as mumtofunkydude. our ds preferred his side until about 6m now at 14m sleeps in every position known to man!

NuttyMuffins · 07/04/2007 09:39

Yep i did with Dd2, it was either that or no sleep for anyone. I also let her sleep on her front a few times too, but only in the day and when she was right next to me.

DaffodilsforeasterFlower3554 · 07/04/2007 09:39

Snap ellceeell, my three were born during the 70's/early 80's and the "rules" for putting them down to sleep changed after each one.

First one on her tummy, ds next on his side, then dd2 on her back.

Very confusing Makes you wonder if they've got it right this time.

madmumNika · 07/04/2007 16:55

Yep, I did with my DS. He was premature & when still in hospital they used to let him sleep any way he found comfiest, but if on side would wedge him with a rolled up towel. I continued to do this once home, and would even let him sleep on his front sometimes - usually during naps in the day when I was in the same room as him and awake but admittedly sometimes at night too. He also ended up in our bed a lot.... Don't feel too bad about it, sometimes for these little ones being flat on their backs is just not comfortable.

PinkTulips · 07/04/2007 17:01

dd never but i probably should have as she was an awful sleeper due to reflux

ds could turn himself over from 4 days old so would end up on his side or tummy himself from very young. now he's 8 months he automatically rolls to his side the second he hits the cot

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 07/04/2007 17:08

Mine are all teens TR but they all slept on their sides. The advice when they were born was not on the front but on the side was deemed ok.

PavlovtheCatthatgottheCremeEgg · 07/04/2007 17:10

yes, if I dont, she will roll there anyway. She prefers it. DD aged 9 months.

RustyBear · 07/04/2007 17:28

My sister's DS1 was born in Thailand in 1982, & her maid (diplomatic service before you ask) gave them some stuffed rolls, with special removable washable covers, which were traditionally used to keep babies sleeping on their sides.
She brought them home & used them for her DS2. She passed them on to me & I used them for both mine, although the advice then (1988 & 1990) was for them to sleep on their fronts - I never thought DS looked comfortable that way & he definitely slept better on his side. DD would (& still does) sleep in any position anywhere, but as I used to feed her in bed she often ended up sleeping with us anyway, on her side, with my arm around her.

cathcart · 07/04/2007 17:31

I often do it trinity, my 9wk dd sleeps better and if she stirs i can rub her back a little and she falls back to sleep.

brimfull · 07/04/2007 17:35

Is there a new rule then?

LaBoheme · 07/04/2007 18:25

I have many many times, only way I could get a wink of sleep. LO is now nearly 4 months and don't have to anymore - just a phase...

suedonim · 07/04/2007 18:29

Mine have always slept either on their back or side, never on their front, even though front sleeping was the fashion with my older ones. A rolled up sheet/cotton blanket behind them is good and also make sure the lower arm is in front of the body so they don't roll onto their front.

My friend who had a baby in Holland (home birth - was given no choice) said the mw gave her a special roll thing to put behind the baby and also a special cylindrical hotwater bottle!!

kiskidee · 07/04/2007 19:11

i have. i was dead worried at the time but there are lots of other factors that go into sids besides sleep position.

un-pc put, ff and lots of socio-economic factors (parental smoking, sleep location and quality of sleep location), sleeping prone as well as solitary sleeping have more to do with sids rates. sleeping on side has more concerns with the baby falling into the prone position than side sleeping itself hence wedging the baby with a rolled up towel to prevent rolling onto tummy.

SleepIsForTheWeak · 09/04/2007 21:03

SOme experts recommend it over sleepingon the back - I always felt more comfortable with him sleeping on his side, was woried about if he threw up and couldn't clear his throat. He is now 9months and loves sleeping on his side, but also rolls onto his tummy and back.... don't feel guilty!
