Daytime naps

A little advice needed...I currently exclusively breastfeed and lb is 4 1/2 months. At the moment i feed to sleep and let him sleep on me for daytime naps (I can occasionally put him down on the sofa next to me). I would like to break this habit and get him to settle himself to sleep in his cot upstairs. He can self settle at bedtime after a good feed. Any experiences or advice on how to do this? I have tried but he gets worked up. I find it difficult to know when to leave him or just give up.

It's not unusual to need to offer more help for daytime naps compared to bedtime.

I would try putting baby in the cot for daytime naps but knowing you might need to provide some in-cot work to get her to sleep.

Try putting down after a feed by leaning yourself horizontally over the cot mattress (I assume on the highest setting) and bend yourself as you put baby down. Then when you pull away, keep your face close to babies and place you hand, fairly firmly, on baby's chest.

Any squirming awake, try shushing close to the ear and patting. It can be quite useful to roll baby into his side for this settling but obviously roll into back once asleep. Don't be in a rush to get away, you may need to invest 20 minutes or so to getting baby to sleep and you want to wait until baby is in a deep sleep.

If baby finds settling difficult and cries, I'd suggest trying a dummy. Just for sleep times. Then as staying close, shushing if needed in baby's ear and patting also give baby a dummy to suck and keep eeinserting it if it drops out. Comfort sucking with a dummy is the most simplest and effective no-crying sleep solution.

If baby is having none of it and cries, lift and cuddle to calm down. Then start again.
