Getting newborn down quicker

Just wondering if anyone has any magic tips for getting a newborn down in the night. DS wakes every 3 hours which is brilliant and works out only 2 wakes/ feeds a night. He just takes so long to get back down though which I know is to be expected as babies are nocturnal.

Just curious any tips or techniques to get him down quicker. Some nights he's super awake after nappy and feed and/ or once asleep in my arms he's sensitive to being put in bedside crib and wakes up really easily.

Some night feeds can take us a couple of hours at a time, mainly because he won't go back down.

Thanks ! Xo

Normal I'm afraid. Try:

Hand on chest / hand next to baby
Dummy
Swaddle
Shush pat method (didn't work for me)
Pre warm the crib mattress
Tuck a used t shirt or pillow case into the crib (not loose, tuck it in like a sheet)
Lots of cuddles
Bouncing

Congratulations on your LO!

There's no need to change his nappy unless he's done a poo. Keep all the lights dimmed. Don't talk to him.

I've heard of some people putting a hot water bottle in the cot while they feed their baby, to keep the mattress warm.

Also using white noise toys/apps.

Of course, hand on chest! How could I forget? Hours I've spent hanging over the cot, with the bar jammed into my ribs! Blush

Hot water bottle worked for us as less shock from a cold mattress.

Also not much help at this age but my LO slept better when I started using a gro-bag. No idea why.

Have you tried a dummy Samantha003? Amazing tool for independant sleep. The idea is not to put newborn into the crib already asleep, the idea is to put into crib almost asleep after the feed and do the last bit of settling in the crib.

Hand on baby's chest, dummy, swaddle, stay physically close to baby.

Assuming baby is less than 3 months, put baby in a swaddle too. You don't need anything fancy for this, just a cot sheet or giant muslin. If baby is less than 6 weeks then definitely use a swaddle, they are almost universally soothed by the enclosed, tight feeling like when in the womb.
