Hi guys

Mum again after 6 years to a 5 week old who sleeps well in the day with naps in the morning, afternoon and early evening but come our bedtime she wakes every hour or so all night until 4 or 5am when she sleeps till 7am ish. Her last good chunk of sleep is usually 8 or 9 - 11.30 ish.
I think she has got her day and nights mixed up.
How do I change them around?

Being older this time around with another child I'm shattered Sad

Congratulations mama! Flowers

So I'm not sure if your first babe was just a great sleeper but this sounds like a normal newborn to me. There's a huge growth spurt around the 5/6 mark and I remember it well - often I would get up at 4 and just sit downstairs watching boxsets with baby attached to me Grin it will get better but for now I don't think you need to do anything x

Thank you. She was worth the wait but I forgot how hard it is!!
Is it worth keeping her awake more in the day?

Ooh no definitely not! Sleep begets sleep is the saying. Here's a useful chart:

Yes do not keep awake! She will get there in her own time, honestly. It takes a few weeks and then they'll suddenly amaze you with a decent nights sleep (or like my dd continue to be a crap sleeper, but I don't want to worry you!)

Do you do bath time with her in the evening? I found that encouraged dd to settle at night slightly better. Not a set full routine, but similarity in the evenings can help. I still brought her back into the living room with me afterwards and she went to bed with me when I did.

How is feeding going Mumagain2017?

I'd suggest more frequent daytime feeds to get more calories in. During the night, what are you doing to get baby to sleep at bedtime and back to sleep in the night?

Thanks for the replies!

Bath time routine goes well then she has a kick about and a bf.

I try to feed as much as possible during the day to keep her topped up.
I'm bfing with a bottle given by hubby at bedtime and HV said top up if given both breasts and she is still hungry so we do that too.

For context she is 9llb9.5oz and put on 2llbs in two weeks so feeding going v well.

Sleep chart v interesting thank You!

At night tbh I bf her to sleep.
We spoke on another thread @crazycatlady and iv tried your ideas but she won't take a dummy sadly.

I just wonder if her days and nights are mixed up as she sleeps far better and for longer in the day.

X

@Mumagain2017 oh yes we have!

It does sound like day and night is mixed up. As soon as she wakes up make sure the room is really bright, and lots of daylight all day where possible, and dim lighting at night. She'll get there in the end! Not sure if it's an old wives tale but I had been told the more active your baby was at night in your stomach, and depending on what time they're born, it'll take s little while to get day and night. It felt true for me as baby was always most active in my tum the minute I got into bed, and she was born at 11.30pm!

Honestly all sounds fine and she'll get there in the end. Keep feeding feeding and snuggling and make sure someone can look after you at times too x

I'm sure babies are meant to develop their natural night/after rhythm around 6weeks so you may find it improves naturally in the. Ext couple of weeks

@boatrace30

Fingers crossed Then!
