Sleepyhead help please!

We bought a sleepyhead grand and are using it with an angelcare monitor with breathing sensor. However since we got the sleepyhead the breathing alarm has been going off a few times a night. Tried to change the sensitivity of monitor but didn't then it pick up baby being in cot at all.

Baby seemed to be breathing ok but when the monitor goes off it just about gives me heart failure. Reluctant to stop using monitor as pfb.....

Then (definitely pfb) started worrying about baby overheating in sleepyhead. Room temp is usually about 18/19 C and baby wears onesie and 2.5 tog sleeping bag.

Can anyone help or tell me what you do with sleepyhead and monitors/clothing. I can hardly sleep at the moment with worrying about baby breathing or bloody monitor going off.

(Baby does seem to sleep better in sleepyhead as otherwise he rolls about and winds up horizontal in middle of cot, wakes himself up by bumping into bars)

I had to just look up pfb as wasn't sure what it meant and have seen it means precious first born.

First of all... breath! You sound like you're getting yourself really worked up Flowers

How old is baby? I assume if in a grand then older than 6 months? Is the cot in another room?

Sittingintheshade · 26/08/2017 09:52

He's 6 months and in a cot but still in our room.

I know, I am definitely an anxious person 😂

I had to google sleepyhead as no idea what they are after 4 children Blush

Are these not aimed at newborns? Surely by six months they would roll out/move around?

Sorry no advice as I never used one, personally I would ditch the monitor, if the worst did happen unfortunately the monitor wouldn't help

Sittingintheshade · 26/08/2017 10:01

There's a newborn size and a bigger size for up to toddlers.

We got it as he rolls about in his sleep and often winds up horizontal in the cot, bumps his head or gets stuck in bars. Then he wakes up crying and then I wake up, it takes a while to settle him again and no one gets much sleep.

I know the monitor wouldn't 'help' if the worst did happen, I suppose it helps me with anxiety over him.

@Sittingintheshade have you spoken to anyone about your anxiety? Would you feel it's rational anxiety or do you think you are often feeling anxious and worried? I am wondering if it could be PNA. Think of how many families all over the world sleep at the same time as their babies, without monitors, and they're fine. Yes the idea of SIDS is terrifying but also actually pretty rare. If you're following safety procedures as well then there isn't too much to worry about. Would you feel better if you sidecarred the cot next to your side of the bed? You could sleep right next to him, you could even rest a hand on him. Although I do think it might help to address your anxiety issues first xx

ineedwine99 · 26/08/2017 10:09

Hi OP, at that temp my baby also wears a onsie and is in a 2.5tog bag. Around 20 she goes in a long sleeve vest and same bag, higher same vest but 1 tog bag. She's always fine for temp in her sleepyhead. Can't help re monitor as we use a video one.

Sittingintheshade · 26/08/2017 10:13

Umm The cot can't be sidecarred sadly. If he wakes in the night I often end up with him in our bed but was really hoping to try to encourage him to sleep in his own cot and we bought sleepyhead to see if it would help with him bumping his head when he rolls. Yes the monitor is really just for my peace of mind but I don't think my anxiety is out of control. I know sids is rare but it does scare me.

Do you mean you think i have post natal depression?

I was really just hoping for other people who have sleepyheads to tell me what they do re clothing and monitors.

Thank you ineedwine that helps

The room gets warmer when we're both in there so I might try him in a l/s vest and see how he goes

I think your clothing choice is perfect. Ditch the monitor altogether. It's not doing it's job and they don't actually work to save lives anyway (research shows this).
Take care of yourself

crazycatlady5 · 26/08/2017 10:26

Ok! No offence intended. Post natal anxiety I was talking about. It just sounds like you're very worked up about it that's all.

I would ditch the monitor if it doesn't work with the sleepyhead.

FannyTheFlamingo · 26/08/2017 10:28

DD is 9 months old and still in our room! I've just bought the Sleepyhead Grand as she was rolling all over the cot and twisting her sleeping bag. We have a very hot house, usually 22-24 at night and she sleeps in a short sleeved vest and nothing else. For your room temperature through, a onesie and 2.5 seem about right. DD always ends up in our bed though, which makes it even warmer. I don't use the monitor though.

Littlelouse · 26/08/2017 10:30

@crazycatlady5 that's such a passive aggressive post. It's quite obvious that OP was just asking some advice re. the very common items she uses with her baby.

I've also bought a movement sensor and a sleepyhead and I've also had to research clothing options to prevent overheating: should I be sectioned?

If you've got no useful practical advice, don't bother posting.

@ineedwine99's advice is really useful OP: she helped me the other day!

crazycatlady5 · 26/08/2017 10:33

I don't understand how it was passive aggressive? I was genuinely trying to offer advice, nothing else. As I said OP no offence intended.

Sittingintheshade · 26/08/2017 10:37

Thank you all, we're going to play about with the monitor and see if the sensitivity can be adjusted more

I suppose I am worked up as if monitor goes off I ping awake and whip baby out of cot. It's scary! But we will maybe have to get rid of monitor if it's not compatible

Thank you littlelouse I'm glad other people have similar concerns

Mine has been in a long sleeve vest gor ages now as her room isn't dropping below 22. Bloody gro blind is like a radiator Grin

Sittingintheshade · 26/08/2017 10:45

Maybe I need one of them! Our bedroom is funny as it's always colder than the rest of the house and it does fluctuate 🙄

Does he seen comfortable in a onesie though? It seems a shame to change what he's used to, to facilitate a monitor which seems to be increasing your anxiety.

Scottish Cot Death Trust sell a thermometer which advises on what to wear at which temperatures - it's available on their website. That might help reassure you?

user1493413286 · 26/08/2017 10:47

I bought a monitor like yours as I was anxious as a first time mum but in her cot I've found it goes off all the time including when I've been standing watching her or can hear her breathing so I know it's not because she's stopped so decided to stop using it. I'd prefer to use it for the reassurance but as soon as she wriggles slightly off the centre of the pad it goes off.
In terms of clothing what you've said sounds about right but if in doubt go cooler and if it's too cold baby will wake up and 'tell you'

gandalfspants · 26/08/2017 10:50

We had sleepyheads until DD was about 7 months - she wasn't in the grand long before she decided she'd rather climb out and starfish, but our big cot is sidecarred so hopefully it will last longer if DC will sleep in a fully enclosed cot.

We didn't use a monitor since she was in our room and I'm a very light sleeper, I think after 6 months you can probably ditch it if everything else you're doing is safe.

ChristmasAccountant · 26/08/2017 10:50

We have the angelcare monitor and had a sleepyhead when ds2 was smaller, we never had any issues with the monitor going off though. Where is your monitor positioned? Our room was warmer so he was in a babygrow and 1 tog sleeping bag.

ChristmasAccountant · 26/08/2017 10:51

Oh and I used the monitor with ds1 until he was 2! Would still use it now if dh would let me buy another one Grin

CottonSock · 26/08/2017 10:51

I use a 1 tog and sleeps sleepsuit at the moment for my baby 13 months in her sleepy head. When it's a hot summer night a 0.5. I don't know if she is a warmer baby than my first or its the snuggles of sleepy head that warm her. Her bedroom is small and quite warm too. If you think you have anxiety then I know this feeling and sertraline made me feel like a different person in a week.

ineedwine99 · 26/08/2017 11:10

She was cooler in my room as it doesn't get much sun, her room gets it all day, sounds like he's perfectly dressed for the temperature if your room Smile
I was terryog SIDS too OP, try not to stress, everything sounds great, probably just the monitor being an arse Grin

ineedwine99 · 26/08/2017 11:10

Terrified! Stupid fat fingers

Sittingintheshade · 26/08/2017 11:22

Thank you everyone

Feeling a bit less worried now!
