advice on co-sleeping an bedside cribs

I have 2DCS already, With both I planned not to co-sleep because of the risks but ended up doing, I did it as safely as i could but as I plan for my third I am wondering if a bedside crib ( like the ones they have in hospital) would be a better option?

Does anyone know what the research is on risks of SIDS from co-sleeping vs sleeping in on of these bedside cribs? Has anyone successfully breastfed a baby in one of these cribs without having to get them out of bed? I would be looking at hiring a bednest so if anyone has any firsthand experience of the hire process and the bednest itself I would be so grateful for your advice!

I can't answer the first question but you can breastfeed without getting out of bed with a Bednest, absolutely! However, I wouldn't recommend it because of the awkward fold-down side and because they grow out of them so damn quick! Next time I'm going to get a full size cot and have it next to our bed with the side off - should still be able to feed and settle without getting out of bed but will have more control over moving them to their own room!

@bensonmadcat I would agree re the bednest! The fold down thing was so uncomfortable I actually ended up taking it off! But they say the nest is supposed to last to 8 months, mine lasted 5 months! I've heard good things about the Chico next to me?

I had an ikea cot with the side off squished in next to our bed, and it worked well. To be honest though, it mainly ended up as storage while my baby snuggled in close to me! Still good to have the extra space though.

I wouldn't go for a bednest as they are unsafe. A baby died in one in 2015 and I am surprised they haven't been withdrawn from the market.
Co sleeping cots are great though, I have heard good things about Chicco next to me too.

no, they are not unsafe if used correctly, and they've changed the design since that incident (where the bednest was not used correctly)

Hire etc is easy but glad it is not just me who finds the sideflap a pain. I can't be doing with another 4 months so most likely will move ds to own room soon as there is a bed as well as cot in there and dh and i take turns fpr proper sleep in spare room anyway

Thank you for your posts. I saw that a baby had died but they have updated the design to address this flaw, however if it's uncomfortable to feed anyway I don't see the point!

There are lots of other models but as we already have a cot and a moses basket I wanted to keep costs to a minimum and hiring seemed a possible solution. This seems to be the only one that can be hired.

I would worry about taking the side off the cot and using that as there would be a gap. no way of attaching cot to our bed.

Thank you all for your input it has given me lots to think about

If you are not concerned about the history of that brand and you can get a clean mattress it's not a bad idea to try it before buying co-sleeper. My boy does not want to sleep in next to me but on my bed. Bering in the crib for him seems miles away I think. Next to me is large and has mesh on one side only which is a bit claustrophobic as the baby cannot look out. The side next to the bed can be either up or down and cannot be adjusted without moving the entire cot. It doesn't open to the level of the bed either so you cannot just slide the child. This was a waste of money for me. I feel that a Moses basket would have similar function for less money placed next to your bed.
