How old was your toddler when they dropped the daytime nap?

DD is 18mo and for the past week has refused her usual 90min nap at midday.

She's soldiering on to 6pm but it's tantrum city from then until we put her up at 6:30pm and lately she's been really screaming in the cot...she's always taken about 45 mins to drop off but this is silence for 20mins then another 20min full on tantrum until she burns out.

The plus is she always sleeps through - but the bedtime battle and dropped nap are going hand in hand. Is this just the new normal?

Dc1 we had to force him to drop it aged 4.5yrs to start school. That's unusual tho

Dc2 dropped it at 3yr3m

I'm preservere with the nap (maybe try him an hour later than you are now) as that's very young to drop it

3 year old still napping 1.5 hours and 10 month old napping 2 x 2 hours a day. I love nap time!

FATEdestiny · 17/08/2017 18:40

DC1 was about 3 1/2 years old

DC2 was about 3 years old

DC3 had to be forced to stop at 4 1/4 years due to starting school.

DC4 will be 3y next month. Absolutely no sign of her nap dropping, she sleeps 3h most days, plus 12h at night.

DD1 was just over 2. Dd2 I've just asked nursery to stop at 2.9 after months of not going to sleep for hours at bedtime and it's done the trick. Apparently I haven't bred sleepy children

liquidrevolution · 17/08/2017 18:47

14 months . Was only ever 40 mins anyway

She slept through from 12 weeks though Grin

GrouchyKiwi · 17/08/2017 18:48

DD1 was about 3, DD2 was about 20 months.

IME they go through a phase of refusing naps for a week or so at 18 months and then get back into it.

DD2 stopped napping early because I was expecting DC3 (born when DD2 was 22 months) and she likes to make things difficult. Wink

The short answer is - yes this is your new normal. There'll be a new new normal along soon. There's no rhyme or reason - its just the way it is for the moment. I found it a lot easier to deal with once I'd stopped trying to analyse the 'reason'.

DD stopped completely at 15mths. She'd been taking shorter and shorter naps for a while and at 15mths just refused to sleep. was happy to sit in her cot for a bit with a bed time of 6.3-7pm.

Hang on in there!

About 2.5 at nursery. On the weekends at home he stopped around 2 years old unless we tricked him into falling asleep on the sofa.

TheMogget · 17/08/2017 18:49

Definitely persist. We've only dropped naps since starting pre-school at 3y.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 17/08/2017 18:50

13 months Sad it was hideous.

TheLegendOfBeans · 17/08/2017 18:54

I really appreciate this; especially the PP who advised not trying to make sense of it; I'd forgotten my own advice!

She's having such an unsettled evening right now but again the pay off is her sleeping through.

I might just be on HIGH ALERT as I need to keep her napping at lunch as I'm due DC2 in 10 weeks and need all the breaks I can get!!

DD2 is 27m and won't go down for a nap but will fall asleep in the car so we go for a lot of lunchtime drives Smile

martiniwini · 17/08/2017 21:10

How is she if you let her nap for 10 mins then wake her?

They are all so different, it's so hard to advise.

TheLegendOfBeans · 19/08/2017 12:05

Day 4 without nap (at home, she's napped at childminders ffs) and I'm trying to stand firm whilst she goes UTTERLY MENTAL in her cot.

She's been up an extra hour today too god give me strength.

DS1 did this at the same age, I panicked about him dropping his nap for good because I was expecting DC2. I still put him in his cot every day and he went back to napping regularly after 10 days or so. He is nearly 3 now and still has his nap.
