What to do at 4.30am?

DC are usually good sleepers but for some inexplicable reason DD woke up at 4.30 and wouldn't go back to sleep, then woke DS up. They were both bouncing off the walls by 4.45 and after 45 mins I gave up and took them downstairs.
My question is what do you do if DC wake up way before they're supposed to? I put a nature documentary on but wouldn't let them watch kids tv. I let them read or play with some quiet toys but I kept mentioning that they should be asleep and that it was too early.
It's a bad time for them to do this as they both have nursery inductions today and if they're tired more likely to be clingy and cry when I leave them. I went back to work on Monday so could this have caused some sort of regression?

I wish I knew the answer, I think it's probably best to buy a couple of fro clocks and keep popping them back into their rooms until they are 'yellow' although it doesn't seem to stop my children signing and playing so loudly we are all awake whilst their clocks are blue!!
I think 'boring' tv is a good plan. I've tried to explain that there is no CBeebies until 6 because it's night time. I'm not sure it's worked.
Best of luck with nursery inductions.

Must be something in the water. I had two extra in our room last night, usually great sleepers. Put travel cot up next to me for nearly 3 year old at 1am, then 7 year old appears at 4am after a bad dream so he was in with us. We were all awake from 6am.

What to do? Well we stayed in bed as much as we could. Then just got up and started the day. It would be very different if this is regular, but it isn't. So we just go straight into tv and breakfast, given there's no practical risk of it becoming a habit.
