4 day old sleeping on side

I've had a rough few nights with DD and her sleeping, although she's been sleepy with jaundice, she's been very restless. Last night was the first night I'd tried to put her in her cot, the day before (1st day home) she was in her carry cot.

The actual cot is way too big so when DD stretched out her arms it panicked her every time and she would cry.

So I bought a next 2 me crib and put her in that tonight. DD immediately rolled onto her side in the crib. I was shocked as I wasn't expecting this so soon and I thought maybe it was a fluke, after putting her in again after a feed, she's done the same thing again.

Is this safe? She's completely silent and not fussing at all like she has been but that concerns me just as much.

My DD did this sometimes. I think the decision depends on whether you think she can roll back if she needs to, or whether she risks rolling over completely and getting stuck, And getting every single bit of the back to sleep advice perfect apart from the back bit, so total smoking ban, perfect bedding, perfect temperature, breastfeed in a feeding chair at night so you don't nod off together in bed, and so in. It might be good to invest in a SIDS alarm for peace of mind. I might be tempted to wedge her around her bottom in some way so she can't do it as easily (but not around her top half).

the thing is she doesn't do it in her carry cot during the day

What is worth remembering is that many/most unswaddled newborn will not like sleeping in the carry cot in the day.

Some swaddled won't either, but the swaddle does make putting newborn down easier.

My point being that preferring to side sleep is a red herring in terms of not sleeping in the carry cot.

I spoke too soon. After a feed during the night, she turned again! Sad This time it was whilst swaddled, she was working away at it with her hands and legs slowly when I noticed it.

No swaddling now! She definitely wouldn't be able to turn back off of her tummy, that's swaddled or unswaddled.

I'll have to try propping up the mattress somehow otherwise I'll not be sleeping even when she does.

How about a tightly tucked in sheet or blanket? That can help pin them down.

I would use a cot sheet across ways, so it wraps all the way around baby and under mattress.
