Night time wind!!

Posted in infant feeding but maybe better here...

DD2 is 7 weeks old and up 2-3 times a night for a feed. She always falls asleep on the breast during the night and I find it impossible to wind her! I try different positions and keep her upright for a while afterwards but nothing, then she'll wake every couple hours or so after that (has a 5hr stretch at beginning of nigh) with wind but the only thing that settles her is another feed which leads to more wind!

I use infacol which helps during the day but not at night.

I've just completely woken her up whilst trying to wind her and have ended up feeding her again to get her back to sleep but I can tell she's got wind as she's unsettled, bringing her knees up towards her chest and screwing up her face occasionally.

Any suggestions??

It's possible she wokeswoke every couple of hours (after the initial block of sleep) for reasons other than wind. The most obvious being hunger, she could just be waking after 2h ready for a feed and that's why a feed settled her.

Is she ok to wind in the daytime? I never found very much vigour was needed. Id just lift baby to my shoulder so in an upright position and then rub back for a few minutes.

Are you breast or bottle feeding? Doing the feed with baby's head higher than stomach can help a windy baby, so not feeding lying down. And making sure the latch onto breast or teat is strong.

It is worth remembering that at this young, baby's physical movements don't mean anything. Baby has no control over her own movements so they don't 'mean' anything. It's just largely uncontrolled muscle contractions.

The knees coming up and face scrunching just means "I am not settled" it does not mean wind. Wind is one of the ways baby can feel unsettled but it is not the only way. I'd suggest that it could simply mean "I'm tired, help me get back to sleep"

Try a dummy.

What makes you think it is wind that is waking her? Is it not just another feed she wants?

When my daughter was newborn, for the first few months, she fidgeted and wriggled a lot in her sleep which is normal (as told by doctor and HV) they're just getting used to their digestive system. I feel your pain though I always struggled to wind baby in the night! X
