Should I be putting my 6 month old in his cot for naps?

Hello,

I have a 6 month old son who now sleeps in his cot, in how own room at nighttime. Apart from the odd whiny grumbly cry he sleeps very well in there on a nighttime.

However, whenever I have tried putting him in his cot for naps he gets hysterical and I have to take him out. I have tried using a routine beforehand to get him ready but he still hates it.

He only really naps at all if it's in my bed with me or on the sofa with loads of cosy cushions (I am always with him, I don't leave him unattended).

I guess my question is, is it bad to continue doing this for naps or should I train him to sleep in his cot?

He starts nursery in October so I would like to get naps sorted before then but I want as little suffering for him as possible.

Part of me just wants to let him nap with me as I love the cuddles (he isn't a cuddly baby normally as he likes wriggling too much) but I think that's maybe a bit selfish of me!

Have his naps extended past one sleep cycle? Once you are getting 1h plys naps, they are worth being moved into the cot. At least one nap anyway, the first is usually the easiest.

Could baby be over tired when being put down for naptime? It could explain him being so difficult to settle.

Hello!

It's a weird situation with nap duration. He normally just sleeps for bang on 30 minutes but yesterday, for example he had a nap at 3pm and woke just after 4pm. I couldn't believe it. It was only meant to be a catnap.

His other naps yesterday were 9:00am (30 mins) and 12:30 (30 mins).

There just seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. To be honest this is fine as I'm not going to force him to take timed naps if he doesn't want to.

I just wish I knew when to put him down. I usually leave awake time to 2.5 - 3 hours as he is happy playing for this long but not sure if it's too short or too long!
