4.30am & hysterical (help!)

I don't normally post but I'm at a loss of what to do. My 2yr old son has recently started sleeping 11hrs. Great! However this can be ok punctuated with 4.30 starts. He wakes up crying for me. I ignore for as long as possible but it comes hysterics, screaming, crying, throwing himself down. I go in put the landing light on but keep his door ajar (so I can see) I'll put him on his bed and just say "it's night time go back to sleep" I try to interact as little as possible but he can get himself in such a state. I find he'll give in and go onto the bed and starts falling asleep but I even breathe wrong it starts again. I tend to give in about 5.30 and give him the ipad so at least I can get a little shut eye. He will not go near my husband and the he's tired and irritable for the morning. Bed time hasn't really changed and he doesn't have milk. He's been a bad napper since birth. Some days he'll have a 2hr nap at lunch time, sometimes not. This doesn't seem to effect night time. ??????? Please let me know if you've got advice!

Giving him theipad is rewarding him getting up earlier. If you also limit ipad time during the daytime, this further incentives waking early for iPad special unrestricted access. If he does wake up, he needs to be bored not given things to do.

So you have blackout blinds?

It might be hard but can you inforce a daytime nap?
I find my 2YO is a horrendous sleeper if he doesn't have a nap but even if he just has half an hour in the day he always gets a full nights sleep?
And agree with PP that giving him the iPad is just rewarding him, it might work for you short term but in the long term he'll just continue to wake for it.
Will he have a warm milk before bed? I give my DS a warm milk with a spoon of hot chocolate in and it works a charm to wind him down.

Good luck hope you find something that works!

Hi ladies thanks!
He does nap most days normally anything from 1.5 to 2.5 hours and I never let him nap after 2.30. Bed time is settled and goes well and he's generally asleep by 7.30.
I know the iPad is giving in but when you've got to go and work full time sometimes I need to give in for my sanity.
I won't give in tomorrow
