8 month old still sleeping like a newborn

DC2 is 8 months next week. He goes to bed around 7/8 and is then up for feeding at 11/11.30pm and then again at 2/2.30 and then up again for a feed and just the day generally at 5/5.30am. Often after a feed he doesn't go straight to sleep, I have to cuddle him or stroke his back until he falls back asleep. He naps for around 40 mins at 7am, and then if I'm lucky we might get 20-30 mins around 3pm. I have tried to extend his napping time but to no avail.
Is this normal? Can I do something to help him go longer? Should I be cutting out bottles? I am so exhausted. DS1 was sleeping through the night by this age and I'm due to start work in September and honestly if I am this tired I won't be able to function. Any advice?

My DS is 8 months next week also.
Does similar to yours overnight-bed at 7.30pm,wakes twice for a feed (I breastfeed him still)-around midnight, then 4ish and awake 6.30am generally for the day. However he does go back to sleep immediately after night feeds.
He naps around 9am for 90 mins, then I cap his nap at 1pm to 75 mins so I can squeeze a cat nap in at 4.30pm. I am hoping to drop this nap over the next few days.
He sleeps in his cot when at home-in almost pitch black and white noise which we play all night. Where does yours sleep?
How much solids does he eat?
It's exhausting isn't it?! Im hoping he drops his night feeds soon...otherwise I might have to help him with that! Im back to work end of October.

He sleeps in his cot as I really didn't enjoy co sleeping with him, he's a grabby baby and my hair was being yanked out by the fistful!
He has never got on with the cot but it's something I am willing to persevere.
He sleeps in pitch black but I will try the white noise - hopefully it'll help?
As naive as it is I really thought when he was changed over to formula (about 3 weeks ago) it would make a huge improvement to his sleep and it hasn't at all. It definitely did with DS1! But to be honest DS1 wasn't like this to begin with.
