Just over 4 months, won't self settle at all. I have a 2.5 year old too so need it to be a reasonably quiet affair so it doesn't wake him?! Am I asking too much?
He will go to sleep if rocked/pushchair/car seat. Have tried putting him down drowsy (almost asleep) and just shushing and patting for a bit but to no avail. He has a dummy which he plays with and when he takes it out he can't get it back in which doesn't help.
Any advice welcome!!! cheers

Dummy and hold his hands as he goes to sleep (so he can't grab dummy). If you were swaddling when newborn, swaddle would be even easier.

If movement is liked, try a bog standard bouncy chair.

Have you ever thought of white noise? My little boy is 4 weeks old and loves white noise, it's something we used with my little girl (now 3.5 years old) and have used right from the beginning this time, he only has on in the evening and bedtimes doesn't have for naps as trying to encourage him to recognise the difference between day and night (easier said than done at this age) I would highly recommend white noise, we have Ewan the dream sheep and he's fab 😁 Xxx

Thanks both.
I have tried white noise yes, and we often use it at bedtime as think helps soothe him and sometimes if he wakes in the night he will settle himself. (So I darent turn it off!)
I have a bouncy chair and he will sleep in that but trying to get him to sleep without it, he's quite a big baby and won't fit in it for much longer!
Will try hand holding but it seems when I put him down, even if he is almost asleep in my arms, he suddenly gets wide awake and rolls around, legs in the air etc.. he just doesn't seem to stay sleepy!!
