Sleepy head grand? I want to stop co-sleeping

Hi
Ds3 slept great (for a baby) into the next to me cot. Once he got too big we tried to move him into a travel cot with a better mattress next to my side of the bed thinking it was only a mesh walls difference. It's basically a nightmare. If he's in there he will only sleep for an hour at a time then is up every hour on the hour. Same if we go away etc. So he's ended up co-sleeping with me.
Except I need my own space. Ds2 is often up in the night and I can't go to him for fear of Ds3 rolling out, same when we need to get up in the morning and he's still asleep. It's impossible if we go away somewhere and dh has been out of our bed for months.
I have 2 ds I need to get to school and can't do the up every hour every night as I'm a zombie all day.
Would a sleepy head work? We would need to get free the grand size but they are £200!! If they work I'd pay it but would it just sit unloved with Ds3 still in with me.
How can I get ds to sleep in his own cot?
Please help wise mumsnet Smile

Sorry it should be 'we need to get the grand size' not sure where the free came from - I wish we could get one for free!! Grin

Can you put his cot next to the bed with the side taken off?

How old is he?

Hmmalittlefishy · 13/07/2017 15:54

He's 10months.
We have a cot bed and it would be too big next to the side of the bed and wouldn't fit.
May be tempted to buy a cheap cot?
I know he's only a baby and I will miss the cuddles but ds1 was upset in the night the other night and I couldn't get to him and had to get dh to go

I know ikea do a space saver cot (I'm sure many other places do too SmileBiscuit) - I would try that to be honest, I'm already trying to wean my 4 month old off her sleepyhead because I wouldn't want to have to get the next size, plus I think once they are mobile it doesn't keep them in place.

Good luck

FATEdestiny · 13/07/2017 18:24

We're you planning on putting the sleepyhead in the travel cot? I doubt that will make much difference, if I'm honest. The problem with settling baby in a travel cot is the fact that you have to lower a horizontal baby so low down.

Having a proper cot would be a better idea. Removing 1 side off that cot an even better idea as a transition from cosleeping.

If you already have a cot bed, id see if you can move furniture around to fit it in.

Hmmalittlefishy · 13/07/2017 19:49

Sometimes if I'm lucky he doesn't wake at being put into the cot it's more that he seems to only sleep one sleep cycle when he's in there but next to me will sleep much longer.
I don't think the cot bed would fit as we wouldnt be able to get into the wardrobe
I was hoping the sleepy head would sort of cuddle round him so he may sleep better and then I could eventually get him into his own room. Just wishful thinking and believing all those amazon reviews of 'my child slept 12 hours the first night its magic etc'!
I just feel I've somehow created this way of getting some sleep and now I can't get out of it [wail]

I may look at ikea - you always need meatballs and dime bars don't you!!

I tried the sleepyhead grand with DS for the same reason, we were reluctantly co-sleeping and I wanted him to move to his cot. He is younger than your DS, but I gave it two weeks and it made no difference so I sold it.

The only thing that has made a difference has been perseverance sadly. But, friends have had success with the sleepyhead. It might be worth a go. Would you consider buying one on eBay, and selling it on if no use?

Hmmalittlefishy · 13/07/2017 20:00

I may look at ebay but they are still really expensive of they don't work and wouldn't be the easiest thing to post onwards!!
How did you persevere? Just keep putting back in the cot?
He will sleep longer in his pram for nap times than in the cot
Maybe it's the travel cot? Maybe being in the same room is worse not better as he can sense me but I'm not there??

Had my lo in a sleepyhead in the next to me for 6 months and then got the grand and put it in his big cot and he loves it. He's 2 and still in it so it's definitely been worth the money. We don't co sleep but it is good for that as it gives them a safe space and you can just reach out and touch them.

I imagine if you got one, you'd then find moving lo to a big cot easier because they'd have the familiarity of the sleepyhead.

I know they are expensive (even a spare cover costs loads!) but they do sell on well. I see them all the time on a Local FB page and people get good money for them. Worse case scenario is you sell it on a lose a bit of money. I say go for it!

jb1305uk · 13/07/2017 20:45

You could try co-sleeping with the sleepyhead next to you on the bed then gradually transition to it being in the cot? We used to get LO to fall asleep in the sleepyhead on our bed, then when in deep sleep transfer it to the cot. Next step was getting LO to settle to sleep in the sleepyhead in travel cot, etc until we got to the stage of them going into their own room.

We find it useful if LO is unwell or has a bad night, we just put it on bed between us then as soon as LO is well again they are back to their own room.

It's expensive but may be worth a try.

Hmmalittlefishy · 13/07/2017 22:21

Thanks everyone
I may try it then. I just don't have it in me to either be up every hour or toughen it out with leaving him to cry.
Will scour ebay and try to see what dh thinks to spending money on either a new cot or over £100 on a sleepy head!

Put your mattress on the floor - then he wouldn't roll off the floor - just the mattress.

Hmmalittlefishy · 13/07/2017 22:39

Hmm But where would my bed go polly? And most importantly all the crap that's shoved under there!! Grin
But yes actually a good thought thank you Smile

We bought one locally via gumtree for £100 to try, then sold it on via Facebook for £100. Collection only, so no issue with posting. I had about 10 emails within a few hours of posting it, so I don't think you would struggle to sell it on it it doesn't work.

In terms of perseverance, I am afraid it did take a few nights of frequent waking and settling. I wasn't up for him crying, so it took a long few nights but he now sleeps happily in his cot. DH did the first few days until midnight whilst I slept in the spare room, then we swapped over. I co-slept from about 3am for the first few nights, and as DS gradually stopped waking- he started doing 8-12-3 roughly after three nights, then I gradually settled him later on each night. We are just about to attempt the move to his own room.

Hmmalittlefishy · 14/07/2017 20:19

Thanks nutty.
I am bidding on one at the minute and may out a shout out on a Facebook selling page or 2. I've seen the smaller ones for sale.
I will keep trying I think. Maybe once I don't have to be awake enough to do the school run I can persevere more!
