Taking ages to go to sleep.

My 2yr old has started taking longer and longer to go to sleep at night.
He goes to bed fine and he just chats to himself and is no real bother but he's starting to take way over an hour to drop off.
Thought maybe time to drop the daytime nap so tried a couple of times and he is like the DEVIL by about 4pm. And then when he is overtired he seems to wake a couple of times once he's dropped off really distressed, so think he probably still needs the daytime nap.
Have shortened it to an hour max and he has it earlier so he is up by 2.30pm.
Thought about putting him to bed later but don't really want to do that if I can help it (I also have a three month old to sort out!)
Any suggestions?
Or shall I just stick it out whilst he is causing no real problems?
Thanks

What time is he going to bed?

Jojo13 · 03/07/2017 21:01

He goes to bed at 7.30. We do the bath, quiet time, story etc and he doesn't mind going to bed at all. He's always taken a little while to drop off, half an hour tops, but this last week he's been awake still chatting at 8.30/9pm (we don't go to bed much later than that!!)

Are there things for baby to do in the cot?

I'd make it as boring as possible.

Id just leave him be. He isnt harming anyone by chatting away to himself before sleep.

Do you think he is getting enough sleep at night? What time is he up in the morning? Is he tired in the morning? It may be that he is getting enough sleep at night or it may be you need to cut his daytime nap down to 30-45 mins so he drops off earlier at night and gets more sleep overall (sorry this is probably not what you want to hear when you have already cut it down!)

Well he was getting up between 6.30 and 7 but the last week we have been having to wake him up most days at 7.30-8 (depending on what the day holds!) He doesn't seem particularly tired in the morning other than that.
Maybe I will just reduce the nap again with a view to gradually weaning him off it altogether!
Thanks
