Hot nights & babies...

So my 4MO daughter is struggling with today's heat- her room is currently at 28 degrees and she goes to bed in an hour 🤦🏻‍♀️ I'll be giving her a cool bath before bed but does anyone have any tips on how to cool their room down? Or just generally cool baby down? She's slept through since she was six weeks but hasn't been napping today because she's getting herself in such a state and it's just horrible seeing her like it- any tips are appreciated 🙌🏽

That's a very hot room! Make sure you keep curtains and blinds closed all day to try an d keep temp down. I would just have her sleep in a nappy and she'll be fine; you may still need to put a layer on her later if it cools down. Babies in the tropics do just fine with these temps so as long as she's not overdressed she'll be fine!

It's so warm. Can babies sleep with a rotating fan in the room or is there a sideaffect to that I don't know of. (For some reason I keep thinking whiplash if you have a fan near by, but if its rotating should be ok??)

My 9 month old slept terribly last night because of the heat, doesn't help that I tend to breastfeed him back to sleep in the night but it's just too bloody hot for both of us! I brought him downstairs in the end as it was cooler on the sofa and eventually he went back to sleep but he was basically awake from 12-3 Shock!

I'm putting him down in just a nappy and his bedroom windows are open at the moment for a breeze. He is clearly tired now but won't go to sleep because he is so hot and bothered. Another long night ahead I think.

We ended up moving DD downstairs to the living room in the travel cot when we couldn't get her room cool. We had tried everything including a damp muslin over her.

If you are in a house open your loft hatch as that will let the heat rise, otherwise the insulation holds it all in

I was about to ask this very question.

DS2 is 14 months, so a bit different to your tiddlers. I'm about to put him down in just a sleeveless vest. There's a cellular blanket in his room but I probably won't cover him yet.

Last night he was in a short sleeved vest and pj bottoms and slept through with the blanket (sleeping through is a very new phenomena anyway, I should add!)

He has massive thighs and I worry about them being sticky and uncomfortable without bottoms on. But then he's been happily rambling around all day in shorts...?

We're in a new-ish house designed to stay warm. Which it very much does. We don't own a fan.

I read a suggestion of hanging damp towels over the windows once, but I'm not sure how effective it is.

Also opening the loft hatch to make a gap in the über-insulation to let the heat out. I might actually do that one...

Only the risk of the cord as a strangulation risk. Keep the whole fan out of reach, but apart from that a fan is fine.

As an avid user of bedside fans (for the white noise and the relaxing air movement as well as the coolness), I think static os better than rotating. The feeling of the sound/breeze coming and going would wake me up. It is the constant that I find relaxing

Given I have my fan on all night every night, 365 days a year - my children have all been used to the sound and breeze from being first born so they sleep with a fan in their rooms for the same reason.

SleepFreeZone · 18/06/2017 20:42

We've got a totating fan on the babies room and it's 28 at the moment. He is in bed in his nappy and a t-shirt.

FATEdestiny · 18/06/2017 20:46

Mine is in a nappy only and a 1 tog sleeping bag - toddler though, 2 and a half years old. So a bit different to those of you with newborns.

Room temp currently showing 28 degrees.

SpecialStains · 18/06/2017 20:48

Get a fan. I got one for myself in pregnancy and now use it for the baby - the white noise is an excellent added bonus. Don't point it directly at the baby, but otherwise fine to use.

28 degrees is hot. In the daytime keep curtains shut but open all windows upstairs to allow air flow.

Just a nappy or a vest is fine to sleep in. If they're cold they will wake and let you know.

I'll probably get told this is a bad idea but one night in desperation I did it (hotel room on holiday, air con broke) I put a damp towel under DS and lightly sprinkled a cotton sheet with water over him. I resprinkled gently every few hours and he slept through and didn't get the sweaty head he usually had.

Jennap07 · 18/06/2017 21:59

Thanks for all the tips everyone!

Update- she's been asleep for about two hours, we opened loft hatch and had the fan in her room- she's much cooler now! temp is now 20 degrees so removed the fan (I worry too much 😅)

Will keep all curtains closed tomorrow with windows fully open as it's set to be another hot one.

If it is warmer outside than inside (ie, during the middle of the day), do not open the windows as you are just letting the hotter air into the house. Only open the windows once it is cooler outside than it is inside.

RogerLimasOldestDreadlock · 19/06/2017 17:21

So DS2, after going out like a light at 6:30, woke up at 10:30 and was up for the day!

He eventually did sleep. At about 1am.

I've picked up some fans this evening, planning on putting a slightly dampened and then frozen flannel on top to hopefully create some kind of air con effect to cool the bedrooms down. (Only a sprinkle of water, just enough to freeze and then evaporate, no where near enough to drip and cause a hazard)

wispytree · 19/06/2017 22:39

We have a big fan on in DD's room (16 months). She's in a nappy and a 1 tog bag. Fucking heat!!! Gro Egg has its angry face on - 28 degrees.

Sparrowlegs248 · 20/06/2017 12:54

My 4 month old has been in just a nappy in his sleepyhead. Apparently the sleepyhead doesn't hold heat but I'm not sure. The toddler has nappy and t shirt. He's had a sweaty head late at night but slept OK and wasn't hot in the morning.
