Where does your baby sleep during the day?

I have a Next2Me which my 8 week dd sleeps in on a night and a bouncer that we have in the front room. Ive been using the bouncer for her to sit in but also when she naps during the day.

I had a catch up with a friend earlier in the week who is a mam of 3 (im a first time mam). My friend advised me to not let dd sleep in the bouncer as it will stop her figuring out daytime and night time and whenever she falls asleep during the day to put her in her next2me upstairs. Ive tried doing this the past few days but it seems as soon as i put her in the next2me and leave the room she wakes up.

Just wondering what everyone else does and for other opinions ans if it matters if i leave dd to sleep in the bouncer?

Bouncers aren't recommended, I had a moses basket downstairs for my first 2, and a carrycot on the buggy that my daughter used.

InDubiousBattle · 08/06/2017 15:56

If either of mine fell asleep in the bouncy chair then they stayed in the bouncy chair! Both favoured the buggy, the sling or on me.

I don't understand your friend's logic. Surely having daytime naps in the same place as she sleeps at night is what would confuse night and day? (Not that I necessarily think that would happen.) Surely having naps in the bouncer helps keep day and night sleep distinct? Unless I've misunderstood your OP.

Mine has always slept in a bouncer in the day as it was the only way to get her off. Also, SIDS recommendations are that all sleep happens in the same room as you - so bouncer is more practical for that.

  • That is, until they're six months, they should be napping in the same room as you.
FATEdestiny · 08/06/2017 18:36

I started upstairs naps once naps were consistantly longer than 90 minutes and baby didn't need the extra help of movement to get to sleep.

For mine, that was around 5-6 months old. Until then and certainly at 8 weeks old, naps at home were in the bouncy chair.

The only safety note I'll add is that bouncer naps should not be unattended. I used to park myself on the sofa, baby in bouncer at my feet, me watching TV and foot-bouncing as needed.

I wouldn't have gone to sleep myself while baby was in the bouncer. If I felt the need for a nap then we would both go upstairs to sleep and baby would be in the cosleeper then.

Mine were nearly always in the moses basket in whatever room I was in, on me (either in my arms or a sling) or in the pram if we were out (I'd just leave them if they were still sleeping when we got home). They did go in the bouncer & I wouldn't move them if they dropped off but I didn't put them in it for naps iyswim.

Like FATE mine didn't really nap upstairs until 6 months. Just because I like to have eyes on them & the routines they do have don't always last that long. I find them a bit more predictable from 6+ months.

My 9 week old DS sleeps wherever he falls asleep during the day: pram, bouncer, sling, me, baby positioning support thingy. Sometimes I can move him to somewhere more convenient without waking him,
sometimes he wakes up and that's the end of that nap! He sleeps more or less fine at night (for a baby!)

Coconut0il · 09/06/2017 23:25

Mostly on my lap. Ocassionally in the carrycot. In the bouncer from about 4 months if I kept my foot on it. In he pushchair for DP.
DS2 is 22 months now and has never had a daytime nap upstairs. We've never had any major problems getting him to bed at night.

Soslowmo · 09/06/2017 23:32

With dcs 2 & 3 I did naps in cots in darkened room. LOVED it when they got a bit older and did the 12-3ish nap each day.

Catherinebee85 · 09/06/2017 23:37

Tiny babies don't need to know if it's day or night do they? They just need sleep somewhere that's safe and supervised.

Sparrowlegs248 · 10/06/2017 02:22

It depends on what we're doing. Ds2 is 4months old nearly, hus brother is not quite 2. In the morning, ds2 often has a bouncy chair nap or in his sleepyhead in his cot, while I get ready and do a bit of housework upstairs. Helltsleep in the car, sling, pram if we go out. In the bouncy chair in the afternoon/evening. Or, on the day that ds1 goes to Mil, we snooze together on the bed.

Blondielongie · 10/06/2017 02:46

When mine was that age it was in a Moses basket in living room. Then moved Moses basket into big cot in own room for day time naps.

Cuppaqueen · 11/06/2017 14:15

My nearly 9-week old has the majority of his daytime naps in the pram bassinet, especially the long ones over lunch and early evening. We don't put him in his cot until we ourselves go to bed about 10pm ish. Other than the pram, he'll sometimes nap on me if he's been fussy/unsettled or if he's just too cute to move Wink and occasionally in the bouncy chair (always supervised). He detests all manner of confinement so slings and carriers usually have him beating his tiny fists in rage. Reading these posts makes me realise how babies are all so different!!

MissisBee · 11/06/2017 14:22

Mostly in his pram carry cot or on me. Short periods in bouncy chair, eg when I'm having a shower I'll park him in it in the bathroom, or in kitchen if cooking etc. He is 5 weeks old - when do they transition from mainly sleeping to having naps as such?

kel1234 · 11/06/2017 14:24

I never put my little boy to sleep in his bouncer or swing as its not recommended, but if he was in his bouncer and fell asleep then I left him.
For all sleeps he slept in his crib upstairs. I don't like Moses baskets at all, so wouldn't ever have or use one. We always had the video monitor and I checked on him regularly. He was fine

TittyGolightly · 11/06/2017 16:51

We always had the video monitor and I checked on him regularly.

The SIDS guidance is because they need to hear an adult breathing to remind them to, not so you can keep an eye on them. So a video monitor isn't "fine".

Kathryn160417 · 11/06/2017 23:05

Thanks everyone! Goes to show how different every parent does things!

Putting her upstairs in her cot doesnt work anyway as she just wakes up not long after. We have just taken to basically letting her sleep wherever she falls asleep (sling, one of us, bouncer etc). Shes got a cold atm anyway so is stuck to me!
