He might be a bit big seeing as he is almost 8 months, but is it worth a try?

It is one thing that I really wish I had done from birth, I think they are a great idea.

they are v expensive though and at 8mo won't last that long.
Can you borrow one or buy one second hand?

Wallace · 17/03/2007 16:15

I don't know anyone with one, but would def be up for borrowing or buying second hand. I have a friend who is pregnant so would probably pass it on

For night sleep? How much of a hammock is it (curve)? Just thinking of his little back.

kiskidee · 17/03/2007 18:29

babies, sml children and lots of grownups sleep in hammocks all the time in Mexico. if your house can take it, you may want to try out a classic mexican hammock. a larger one. out there, you would sling it over the bed for the baby. tie a rope to it and pull on the rope when baby stirs. also, a long stick like a broom handle is used as a cross bar across the top to make a basket out of it.

Wallace · 17/03/2007 20:37

wotzsaname - it is like this sort of thing

kiskidee - that sounds wonderful, and just what I need. I love the idea of having a rope attached to it which I can use to rock it without even leaving bed...bliss

koala hammock only suitbale up to 9 months according to the blurb.

tbh some kids are just crap sleepers. my dd1 was still is a bit dd2 is not. are you poss at the "there must be a gadget that will cure this stage?"

i bought everything going for my dd1 made feck all difference. at 17months she slept through.

Wallace · 17/03/2007 21:39

PMSL laughing MrsApron - you've got it in one

Tried the blankie/dummy/comfort toy/musical night light/etc

Thing is, my ds slept through at 9 weeks old, and would sleep up to about 10-12 hours solid. This lasted until about 4 months, and since then he has got worse and worse. We cosleep at the moment but doesn't really work for us as he feeds constantly than ends up uncomfartably full and whingy.

I didn't see the up to 9 months limit, only the up to 20kg weight limit...

MrsApron · 17/03/2007 21:47

i am pretty sure it is 9months. tbh if your baby could sit up from lying on back they could flip out of the koala.

Wallace · 17/03/2007 21:59

You are right about the 9 months limit...bugger

I found this! baby hammock whaddyathink?

MrsApron · 17/03/2007 22:08

yes

Wallace · 17/03/2007 22:14

pefect, kiskidee!! Thank you Off to persuade dh!

The best one I have heard was somebody on mumsnet who used to feed their baby lying down in bed with the baby on the moses basket mattress. Then they would lift the whole mattress into the moses basket Class!

hrc · 17/03/2007 22:17

We used a hammock for HRH instead of a moses basket. It was great and as she was prem very snuggly for her. She suffered from v bad colic and the bouncing which she could do herself simulated movement (well thats what I think!) and helped to calm her. We took her out of it at 5 months as I felt she was getting a little big. It was an Amby Natures nest Hammock from babyworld.co.uk. It was expensive but for us worked really well and I'd recommend it. Great through the heat of last summer as it moved about in the breeze as well.

kiskidee · 17/03/2007 22:23

you may want to investigate this site.
here

i haven't read much but it may make you 'hammock smart'.

the thing is, the wider a hammock, the better. in a wide hammock you sleep on an angle 'across it' rather than up an down it the way it is hung. The diagonal across it means that you can roll a bit without rolling out of it.

with this diagonal lay and the 'broomstick' i mentioned earlier, a sleeping baby won't roll out of one. that is of course, we grew up rocking / sleeping in normal sized adult hammocks as that is all you get in the Yucatan Peninsula!

oh i wish i had a hammock now.

Lidl had them on special last year. they were narrow so I bought 2 with the intention to sew them together to make one.

MrsApron · 17/03/2007 22:26

FWIW my dd1 was similar never reached the dizzy heights of 12 hours but was a fab sleeper until 4 months. on the basis of precisly nothing i have decided to blame her vaccinations. DD2 remains unvaxed for now....

what about a cosleeper , you could probably feed him while he was in it and you in bed if you tried hard enough.

mini one wouldn't last long I don't think, depends whether he like to be tighly surrounded or not.

Useful tip, if you can pick up their arm or leg and let it go and it just drops they are asleep, any resistance they are faking.

like the mattress story.

AitchYouBerk · 17/03/2007 22:58

hhhhm, wallace, it depends how active he is but DD was out of hers at about 9 months cos she could pull herself up in it. i loved our amby, and at the moment my friend's tiny baby twins are in it (twins! together! oooooooh looovely) but i'd doubt that you'd get much use out of it at his age. which is a bugger. that cheaper one with the toddler in it looks okay... but the great thing about the amby (and to me its major selling point) is that it has an enormous great spring at the top that you can bounce.
shout out for Jimjams, see what she says. i know she had an amby as well. but the two babies i know who had the amby (dd was one) were both out of them by nine months.

Wallace · 18/03/2007 21:07

He is not crawling or pulling him self up yet, but it is probbaly still not worth it. Last night I propped him up a bit with a cushion and he actually slept for 3 whole hours! in his cot before waking. Which was pretty good compared to waking 5 times before midnight the other night...

We have the side off his cot, and it is pulled right up against the bed, so I can feed him in it, but is very uncomfy! I used to be able to feed him and put him back in his cot, but I never stay awake for long enough now...

AitchYouBerk · 19/03/2007 21:16

how did it go last night?
btw, in her cot dd sleeps on a bunched-up duvet on her tummy. she seems to like the elevation.
