Persevere..?

Hi.. my son is 30 weeks. He has always slept through the night from early.. around 8 weeks or so with the occasional night of waking. When he was moved to his cot at 3 months he would always kick his covers off and be freezing so he's wore a grow bag from then. When in his grow bag he would basically wake up in the position he fell asleep - like a starfish. 3 days ago.. I decided as the weather was less cold to take his growbag off him. He has been waking up sporadically through the night. Talking/playing to whining then eventually crying until he is fed then will go back to sleep over a period of up to 2 hours. He kicks his covers off as quickly as they are out on. He has been moving more around his cot... top of his cot.. sideways... reaching over and stuff. My question is .. is it a coincidence he has started waking up? Is he going through a growth spurt? Or is he simply enjoying his new found freedom or perhaps even waking up because he is cold? I don't know if I should put him back in his grow bag or just persevere. I feel he is learning more to move himself around now he doesn't wear one so would be more beneficial to him without it- although he isn't (and neither am I) getting a full nights sleep

I would definitely put him back in a gro bag. I used them for all my kids. You can get different togs for different weather. I even used one that is literally a single sheet weight for high summer.

catchyjem · 05/05/2017 07:31

Oh, and I didn't stop using them until they moved into beds at around 2.5 years old!

FATEdestiny · 05/05/2017 07:31

What's the problem with staying in a sleeping bag?

I'd hazard a guess that the vast, vast majority of babies stay in a sleeping bag until ready for a proper bed. So you would be unusual to not use one.

Mine all stayed in a sleeping bag until around 3 years old.

Stephdufc · 05/05/2017 07:34

There's nothing wrong with staying in the sleeping bag. I suppose I'm worried that as he grows older he won't be able to sleep without one ? And also wether he is going to be too hot at night. I did get him a lighter one for summer. I don't know why I took him out of it tbh Confused

I'd put the Grobag back on and get a lighter weight one if needed. He can practise moving in the day! He might be missing the wrapped up feeling, plus it gives children a cue it is sleep time.

Stephdufc · 05/05/2017 07:36

Ok thanks. I think I will put him back in it

Definitely put him back in a bag. You don't want him practising moving at night!

BendingSpoons · 05/05/2017 07:38

Cross post - as an adult I generally need a cover, even a sheet, unless it's very hot. If it's that warm he may be less bothered. Of course it may just be coincidence and he is working towards a physical skill which may affect sleep.

mistermagpie · 05/05/2017 07:41

Put him back in the bag! You can get really lightweight ones for summer that are just a sheet really. My DS loves his bag and hates getting it taken off in the morning, I will be using them until he gets too big.

Timetogrowup2016 · 05/05/2017 07:57

Keep him in it .
Get a lighter back and adjust the layers underneath as it gets warmer .
He probably liked the security and comfort a bag can bring some babies and toddlers

I suppose I'm worried that as he grows older he won't be able to sleep without one?

The phrase "trying to run before you can walk" springs to mind.

You aren't the first and you won't be the last. Lots of mums (in particular first time mums) think that they must make sleep harder for baby because of some perceived possibilities in the future. Then end up making sleep so difficult for baby that when this "future" arrives, they have a much worse sleeper than they would have if they just made sleeping easy for their baby initially.

Don't worry about it.

You can get 1 tog sleeping bags for summer. Even 0.5 tog if you are going overseas. You can get mainstream sleeping bags up to 3 years old and many do an older toddler 3+ size sleeping bag if needed. But by then, your child will have completely different sleep needs to your 7 month old.

Stephdufc · 05/05/2017 10:15

Yeah I'm going to put him bag in his bag. I realise I was being silly. Grow bags are new to me so I have no idea what the 'done thing' is. I didn't realise they went up to the older ages either. To be honest I wouldn't have knew they existed or what they were if I hadn't won one in an email competition while pregnant!

Agree with fate above,
Currently dd is in 2.5 tog bag with long sleeve vest. She sleeps all night like that,

Honestly do not worry about the " rod " thing.
I spent money a months stressing about that
