Just found these details on the web-
Kip for kids - how much do they need?
A good gauge of whether or not your child is getting enough sleep is if you have to wake them in the morning. If he or she wakes up, bright-eyed, without prompting, then sleep-deprivation isn't a problem. However, experts recommend the following sleep allowances:

2 years 13 hours
3 years 12 hours
4 years 12 hours
5 years 11 hours
6 years 11 hours

i agree, if they are waking up happy they are probably getting enough sleep. my ds 3 1/2 has about 11-12 hrs a night which seems to be right for him.

my nephew who is 13 mnths only sleeps 10 hrs at most inc naps!! don't think this is enough.

The table seems about right, my 5 yr old sleeps 11 hours but I used to allow 12 hours at 3 and younger.

I think it also depends on the child. My ds (3.5) has always slept far less than the averages while his playmate (2 months younger than him) sleeps far more. Ds sleeps 9:30-7:30 and often doesn't nap during the day. If he does it's only for an hour. I don't wake him and our house is quiet, so his waking time is completely related to his not needing any more sleep.

My three yr old and my 6 1/2 yr old never require more than 10 hours a night - if i put them to bed at 7 they are up about 5 or 6 and if i put them to bed later (about 9) they are up at 7

Hi.
my children aged 1, 6 and 9 go to bed at 7pm and wake at 7.30 am.
this seems to be ok for them.

Dd1 aged 7 goes from 7.30pm to 8am
Dd2 aged 5 goes from 7pm to 8am (both share a room).

Both dds have always needed a lot of sleep.

I have a friend whose dd has about 10 hours a night and has done since she was a baby - she NEVER slept during the day!! HV said some babies just don't need it - she certainly didnt.

I think the advice about not needing to wake them is spot on. If my two have a late night they just sleep in in the morning to make up for it (bless). I know, I know, I'm lucky ....

my 6mth old ds still wakes every 2-3 hours at night and doesnt sleep much during day. Yesterday he slept for 10mins all day between 9.30am-7.30pm. He seems to get by on cat napping and is a very cheerful little chap. hoping it can only get better but think it may be my fault for not doing any gina ford routines....

Ds1 (4yrs) usually sleeps from 11pm - 7am with no naps during the day.

Ds2 (17mths) usually has a 30min nap during the day (if I'm lucky) and sleeps from about 10.30pm - 7am.

Neither are usually tired or cranky during the day so that's all they seem to need.

Hi there..
Interesting topic..

My DD aged 10 months manages a 2 hour sleep in mid morning, followed by another 1-1.5 hours sleep in the afternoon..
But heres the bad bit!! She then won't sleep till gone 11.00pm most nights and will then wake up at 8.00am the folllowing day..
I have tried the Baby Whispers methods of putting to sleep earlier in the evening and have to end up admitting defeat..
Any one got any advice..?
