Advice on blankets (no Grobags please!!)

I can't seem to find any advice on blankets without the topic moving on to Grobags. I do intend to use a Grobag but their site does recommend that you start using them at 4-6 weeks.

What blankets/sheets do you use for a new born? i am a first time mum and need some advice!

a couple of brushed cotton sheets.
Don't use fleese though as small babies are likely to overheat with them.

MrsDoolittle · 13/03/2007 10:26

fleece even!!

I bought a big cotton waffle blanket from an old fashioned department store and cut it into four - hemmed the edges with satin ribbon

so I used a sheet and one of those for the first two dds

dd3 went straight into a cotton sleepingbag - not a grobag, a proper 100% cotton one from another site - from day 5. sorry

try to get 100% cotton cellular blankets

I am sure mothercare do them

asampras · 13/03/2007 10:32

I know this sounds silly (i am the first of my group of friends to have a baby and first of my sisters so have no one to ask! - parents & in-laws just tell me 'it was different in our day'!) but are the cellular blankets the ones with holes in? also what does the baby wear to bed under blankets?

gap do lovely little newborn 'dresses' - for boys or girls - with drawtrings at the bototme - much eaiser than babygors when they are tiny

I really do appreciate all the advice coming through! was feeling quite lost on the what to use. I just googled cellular blankets and think the 100% cotton ones sound good. So do i just need a cotton flat sheet to go underneath?

we had cellular blankets (bright orange pram size one for swaddling from mothercare, plus a larger lilac one) and moved quickly onto sleeping bags. we also had one of those drawstring dress type things which were handy for nighttime nappy changes, it was from gossypium, the organic cotton people.

NotanOtter · 13/03/2007 10:44

i buy all my baby bedding from John lewis - cotbed sheets for swaddling and cellular for over the top
Never used grobags dc5 ( one in feb) is still swaddled

MrsDoolittle · 13/03/2007 10:53

Am impressed Notanotter.
On sunday we had some people round for lunch. Afterwards we were sitting round drinking coffee and we heard a thump.
DD was happily playing with her 'baby', the dog was lying on the floor and ds (13 months) was napping upstairs - we assumed it came form the neighbours.
About half an hour later our friends were leaving and when we looked up the ds was smiling at us at the top of the stairs.

He's obviously pushed himself out of his cot and was so pleased with his accomplishment he didn't cry.

yes mrs d - only just thought aout it tbh - maybe its a bit old - he does not complain though!

I used and am still using John Lewis 'cotton interlock', jersey-like, fitted bottom sheets - so soft. I use Mothercare 100% cotton cellular blankets (with holes) cos I find them softer than John Lewis ones. During the summer, I used home/self-adapted top sheets - I bought one John Lewis Polycotton Percale double bed sheet and cut & sewed it to make 3 cot size & 4ish pram size sheets. They are so much lighter & cooler than other sheets so were ideal over DS for daytime naps. In the early days, DS wore a drawstring nightie thingy (as already described) from Mothercare, or a babygrow, with or without a short-sleeved bodysuit.

All of these wash and tumble well.

I don't want to try to convert you, because you have clearly made your decision, but we used a sleeping bag from when D was a few days old. He was a real wriggler and I found a Mothercare bag suitable for 7lbs+. He is still in sleeping bags at 21 months and I find it SO easy.

I never thought I'd have so much to say about bedding

Mumpbump · 13/03/2007 14:57

For ds, I used a small cellular pram blanket and swaddled him in it until he was about 4 mo. He doesn't really like grobags although I have quite a few!! Blankets are easier now that he seems to have lost the startle reflex.
