Early morning waking

Hello.

my 4 month old has got into a bad habit of waking between 5.30-6. He used to sleep til 7am and beyond but it's gradually crept earlier. He starts to stir around 530 but with his eyes closed and then gradually gets more awake. I usually give up and pick him up around 5.45.

He sleeps well otherwise. Last night he slept through from 6.30 with one dream feed.

During the day he naps 5 times. Unfortunately he's a serial cat napper so only does 30 min naps. I've tried bouncer pram etc but still wide awake after 30 mins. I've kind of just come to accept the catnapping and hoping he learns to nap longer as he gets older.

I was just wondering whether there's anything I can do about the 539 wake ups?! I'm not sure whether I'm expecting too much and just need to go to bed earlier myself or whether I can retrain him to sleep in a bit longer!

It's probably light sleeping due to hunger. Have you tried getting to baby with a feed before she properly wakes up. May settle back into a deeper sleep with a full tummy.

When he wakes up at night he will feed but after 5am he's too awake! If I try and feed him he just holds the bottle in his mouth and smiles and blows raspberries. Unfortunately I can't feed him when awake..he has a cows milk allergy and despite now being on the right milk he has a feeding aversion. He only takes half the amount he should and I can only feed him as he's dropping off to sleep so just before naps or bedtime! 5am he's too awake...!

Early waking is often linked to naps. But catnapping is also very common and hard to do anything about. If you can try and lengthen the naps and have fewer of them that might help. It did us.

How did you manage to lengthen the naps? I've tried to resettle but it usually takes me over an hour which is his awake time anyhow so I gave up in the end!

I got a bit obsessed and took her in the car at nap times for about a month. She'd sleep longer in the car. After a month I was able to get her to sleep in the house for longer. It was hard though!
