Baby still in carrycot at nearly 8 months - where to next?

Ds still in M&P carrycot as he likes to be snuggled tightly. He likes to look at the enclosed side and sometimes rub his fingers on it as he drifts to sleep.
He was swaddled for ages as otherwise he wakes himself up rubbing his eyes but now just tightly wrapped with normal sheet/blanket combination. Grobag purchased was a disaster as just woke 2 hourly.
We have a cotbed which is just vast and he can't sleep in except for short naps.
However.. his head is nearly at the end of his carrycot and he needs something bigger.Any recommendations of something inbetween the two or what I can do to make him feel more secure in his cotbed.Saw somewhere someone suggested sewing arms onto Grobag and somewhere else putting towels rolled up next to the baby in the cot - but are these safe options?

Hi MadMarchHare

You can buy a gadget that is intended to make a slatted cot end safe when putting babies down feet to foot, called safa baby or something similar - I can't check right now because DD is in bed. It is an exendable divider that you attach to the cot, we used it for the same reason, the cotbed was too daunting so we made it shorter with this. This should help with the length but not sure about the width, I would be conserned about suffocation using towels etc. Perhaps someone else can help there. I bought my divider from Kiddicare.com, they also have a store in Peterborough which is well worth the trip if you are fairly close. Also we put her moses basket into the bed for a few weeks first to help the transition.

Until ds discovers the joy of movement in his big cot, you could try covering him with a sheet/blanket well tucked down along the sides of the cot and put something like a rolled up towel alongside side him, on top of the sheet/towel - that should give him something to feel on either side, and I'm guessing that he doesn't move very much when he's asleep at the moment. When he's used to that, put him in a growbag with things either side. That's what I did when I moved dd out of her carrycot into her big cot. When he discovers the joy of movement, that may not be a good arrangement - dd is now all over the place in her cot!
