Nap training - what works?

DD will be ten months in the New Year when I go back to work and we will have a nanny of sorts looking after her at home. Naps have always been hard work although as recently as two months ago she would go to sleep in her cot for both naps, after some whinging and careering around, and sleep for a good hour so I know she can do it!!
Since she's gotten more mobile naps have become very hard again and we have gone back to feeding/rocking/buggying to sleep. I have the house to myself first weekend in Jan for a long weekend so as DH is hopeless as hearing DD whinge or cry I'm thinking of trying some nap training to see if I can get her self settling again.
Hit me with what has worked for you please! Thanks Grin

Ally yes I'm sure this could be the case some of the time, especially when she was younger and first hit the four month regression, but I don't think so much now. For instance often in her cot she's not actually that upset, she's just standing up and shouting for attention; she tends to get more of an upset cry the longer it goes on and I assume by this point she is overtired.

I've tried just going with the flow and she ends up barely sleeping!

I also try to tire her out but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Even after swimming she will often only have a 30 minute nap.

Appreciate all the suggestions though, keep them coming! Smile

Just a thought - maybe she only needs one long nap in the late morning / middle of the day? Both of mine moved to one nap at 10/11 months as they were resisting the afternoon nap strongly. Naps fell around 12 for ages and could last up to three hours which was then sufficient until bedtime. Could you try eking the morning nap a little later by 15 minutes a day to test the theory?

I was thinking I might try that gin... a 3 hour nap would be utter bliss! Grin

Mine was a bit rubbish at naps and I worried when I went back to work but the childminders were brilliant. I figured they'd just sort it because that's what they do! He's 15 months now and naps twice a day, after milk in his cot at home or in his pushchair or the car, or the childminders do something magic with a travel cot!

It can be so very stressful this napping thing! If she's sleeping well for her morning nap that's great, after 1year they can drop down to 1 nap a day. Maybe give yourself a break for a few days then go back to it, if it becomes a fight each time then it's not going to induce sleep. My 14month old had 2 naps a day morning half hour, afternoon luck to get 1.5, now his changed to morning nap being a long one and sometimes no afternoon nap just bedtime for 7pm
You know your child go with your feelings of what would suit her

Ally quite possible you hit the nail on the head.... this morning she settled to sleep okay but only slept for half an hour. A couple of hours later I went out to an appointment and left her with DH who was just finishing up a phone call and then was going to give her lunch... received a text message just as I was leaving my appointment with a photo of her fast asleep splayed out on the bed next to him! Apparently she'd just put her head down and fallen asleep during his call!!! Little minx... So we went out this afternoon and I didn't think about or try to get her to nap AT ALL! Might be putting her to bed a little early but we'll see how it goes...

Glad to hear little one slept! I just think you can worry too much about things when babies are concerned. Must admit I've got two very good sleepers but I've never spent much time thinking about their daytime naps. So my advice came from that, don't think too much 👍🏻 Long may it continue! She'll be walking soon and it'll be easier to tire her out, I recommend ten laps of the biggest field you can find ha.

Luckily we live near quite a big playing field so I think we might be taking daily trips there once she's toddling!!
