Bedtime routine 5 week old

Just looking for some advice as thinking of trying a bedtime routine tonight. For the past couple of nights my baby has fed around 9pm/10pm only woken once around 4am to take 1oz of formula then back to sleep. She gurns around half past 6 with eyes still closed but settles a dummy or ewan the sheep then wakes around 8am.

I was thinking of bathing her around 7.30pm tonight, feed, story etc and putting her in her cot. We live in a flat and the room is right next to us so can check every few minutes if need be and we have a monitor. I'd then try to dream feed around 10pm/11pm in the room.

Am I crazy to try this at this early stage? She settles to sleep by herself during the night after feeds already and the fact she is only waking to take 1oz makes me think she might be ready to sleep longer.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Crazy to try a routine that 5 weeks. It will your routine not her.

SIDS guidelines are all sleeps should be in a room with an person until 6 months. We flouted that later but I would not do it at 5 weeks.

What heir said.

Yes you're crazy Grin

It's too early.

Your baby is sleeping 9pm- 4am at 5 weeks old? And you are contemplating interfering with that? In the nicest possible way, you are stark raving madGrinYou're getting a nice long stretch of sleep there- don't mess with it!

The thing with the SIDS guidelines is that checking regularly isn't enough, when they're so tiny the sound of you breathing helps them regulate their breathing.

Hang in there Brew

Also what she said ^

Don't mess with sleep when it's working!

I don't agree it's too early - can't you start a simple routine for when she goes to sleep at 9 so that she gets used to it and then as she gets bigger and her sleep changes, gradually move it earlier? She will already know what the routine means by then.

All 3 of mine were asleep upstairs in the evening by 8 weeks BTW - once they 'woke up' during the day at around 6 weeks and naps changed a bit, they would never have slept in the lounge with all the noise and light, they preferred calm upstairs.

Don't over think it, just naturally start to introduce it.

One of my DC was sleeping 12h without waking from 7 weeks old, he was waking for only a single 1am feed from birth pretty much. So it is within the realms of possibility that he's ready to start sleeping through.

You need to consider SIDS recommendations that you should be in the same room as baby at all times until 6 months. Not everyone follows all SIDS recommendations to the letter, but it should be an informed decision you make from a risk management point of view.

Another option would be to do bedtime routine at 7.30 as planned but put baby to sleep in Moses basket (or similar) in the living room with you. Wake for a dream feed as you mentioned and put baby 'to bed' then.
