I'M LOSING THE SLEEP BATTLE

My LO and I had got into a great sleeping pattern. I would settle him down and he may wake a couple of times but I'd just tuck him in and he'd go straight back to sleep. He's now 14 months old and things have gone backwards. I still settle him to bed no problem but when he wakes up a couple of hours later he won't settle at all. He has a tantrum if I try and tuck him back in and screams the place down until I pick. I have been taking him in with me to settle him and then popping him back in his cot when he's asleep but then two hours later - same again.

I've tried giving him an extra snack before bedtime to make sure he's not hungry and if he looks like he needs it I give him a bottle when he wakes up which soothes him but only for a couple of hours.

I did controlled crying to get him to sleep months ago which was successful but now if I leave him he screams the place down but it's pure rage. He's dry he's fed he's warm enough....I don't know what else to do.

New neighbours have moved in upstairs for the first time since he was born so he's not even catching up on his sleep during the day as they are banging around. Feel so sorry for him!

Should I try controlled crying again and just let him work his temper out and self soothe?

I'm a single mum who's returned to work part time and I'm desperate...I can't afford to take any more time off through exhaustion. Any advice gratefully received!!

is he being prevented from napping during the day by them and then he's totally overtired - can you try napping him in his buggy so he gets that nap? Otherwise, though, yes, I'd CC him. I find we have to do it again every few months or so when dd tests boundaries again. It's horrible, I hate doing it but you've got to sleep...if you've ruled out teething, sickness, hunger, being woken by noises (are neighbours banging around and waking him up), then i don't see what else you can do, I can't function on broken sleep.

If he's not napping in the day he could be overtired which sometimes shows itself in extra night wakings.

Yes have pretty much tried everything. The neighbours haven't even fully moved in yet, (that happens this weekend) but they are there every morning from 7am bashing about. I think he possibly is overtired. My childminder has been taking him to hers during the day for his nap so he gets a decent sleep but I think he's struggling to adjust to the noises. He sleeps much better with her though so suspect part of it is that he knows I'm h is mum and senses my stress...

any chance you can talk to the neighbours about downing tools at nap time and by bedtime?

So the problem arises from the fact that he wants to cosleep with you. You need to decide what you want to do and stick with it.

If you are ok with him in your bed, just make peace with that and get on with it without feeling bad about it. Then he won't scream.

If you are not ok with It, stop bringing him into bed. Every time. Just don't do it any more and deal with the anger that generates without giving in.

The problem at the moment comes from mixed messages - is he allowed to sleep in your bed or not?
