Co sleeping crib/cot

SleepForTheWeak · 04/12/2016 12:00

DC2 is due in June and I really want to get a co sleeping crib. DD was put of her Moses basket and into her own room at. 4 months which was far too early, she was still feeding A LOT during the night and it meant me getting up and down like a yoyo.

I've looked at the next2me, bednest and snuzpod. Can anyone give me reviews on these? Would be looking to for sleepyhead in it too

Space is an issue in our bedroom but in an ideal world I would prefer a cot that o can remove a side and push up against side of bed. I've heard of people using IKEA ones to do this - does anyone know which ones? Our bed is 61cm high - Will a cot go up high enough to be flush against our bed?

DD (2) still comes into our bed most nights, so want a safe space for baby without having to put him/her in her own room too early.

TIA

I think pretty much all cots are flat pack so you can remove one side. It would very very high-end to have a solidly made cot that comes in one piece. Ours is a John Lewis cot and had one side removed. I've done the same with a Mothercare cot and a Mommas and Papas cot.

IKEA do a space saving cot if space is an issue. You need an adjustable height mattress base, which I assume most cots have but the budget ranges might have fixed based. I've had 2 different beds and 3 mattresses on my bed over the decade that I've been using a cosleeper cot and the top mattress height of the cot has always matched the height of my bed, so I've always assumed they must be standard heights.

Removing furniture from your bedroom and putting into the nursery is always an option to fit a cot next to your bed. When I have a baby sleeping in our room, getting dressed (particularly DH getting ready for work early morning) has to happens elsewhere, so as not to disturb the sleeping baby. So drawers, clothes horse, dressing table etc are better suited out of the bedroom for baby's first year, I found.

Can't give you a review of the various co sleeper cribs, but I'm sure others can. I much prefer a full sized cot bed with plenty of room, wedged up to my bed like an extension of my bed.

Thanks Fate, that's really helpful Smile

Don't get a bed nest - the US & Canada don't sell them anymore and NCT have withdrawn their recommendation of them due to safety fears and sadly a number of babies have died using them.

I have a snuzpod and find it great.

villainousbroodmare · 04/12/2016 17:56

I'd recommend the side-off-the-cot option with the Sleepyhead; it worked so well for us. The only slightly annoying thing is that whoever is on the baby's side - probably you if you're bf - has to scramble down the bed to get out the end, which is not awfully convenient. But otherwise it's ideal and economical.

SausageSoda · 04/12/2016 17:59

Should've mentioned that I also use sleepyhead in the snuzpod - it fits fine.

SleepForTheWeak · 04/12/2016 18:15

Thanks - Just speaking about it with DH with the possibility of moving our wardrobe and chest of drawers into the nursery and bringing the cot bed in beside us. Our bed would have to be pushed against one wall which would mean it was awkward for either of us getting in and out. We have a spare room which we could do up for DD and get her a double bed so we could still sleep in with her if necessary and if we have guests (which we do quite often) they can sleep in there and DD can come in with us

So much to think about!!

Still need to convince DH about the sleepyhead....

We have a snuzpod with sleepyhead in. Space wise we can't really fit anything bigger than a bedside one in. The Chico next to me is a little wider, but not as pretty. It all worked well for us.

FATEdestiny · 04/12/2016 20:41

Sleepyhead would completely defeat the object of a cosleeper, to me.

I liked that i could slide baby (in sleeping bag) over into my bed, lie there and breastfeed and drop to sleep in the process then at some later point wake up then slide the fed and now deeply sleeping baby back over into the co sleeper.

The having to pick up and put down (and that damn altitude sensor babies seem to have) is exactly what I avoid with the co sleeper. It becomes a sideways slide instead. But with a sleepyhead you still have to lower baby into it after feeding.

juniorcakeoff · 04/12/2016 20:46

Further to villainous post do not underestimate the agony of having to scoot down the bed to get out in the first few weeks after birth...
A baby has died using bednest, they have made adaptations, use your own judgement but I wouldn't buy a second hand one.

Kstar8 · 04/12/2016 21:00

We had to go for a Knuma Huddle as our bed is so high and most co-sleepers only reach a height of about 60cm I think. Our bed is over 65cm and the Huddle is great. We use a Sleepyhead in it although probably could have persevered without it and just used mattress.
It's a solid, well made cot and we really like it.

FATEdestiny · 04/12/2016 21:01

A baby has died using bednest... that was set at a gradient far to steepsteep and the 7 week old baby was placed FACE DOWN on tummy.

Now I'm not a fan of any bedside crib (as mentioned above) but i don't go around spreading hysteria about then.

NCT broke association because of negative publicity, not safety concerns.

The mother had complete disregard for safety advice and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome messages. There will always be parents who have lax attitudes to risk and safety. This does not make the equipment (that they used inappropriately) inherantly unsafe.

SausageSoda · 04/12/2016 22:39

I think the 7 week old baby rolled over rather than being directly placed on her stomach? Tragic regardless and the sale of them are still banned in some countries

FATEdestiny · 04/12/2016 22:45

No. The baby was put in the cot face-down

I used the next2me crib because we have an ikea malm bed with a small lip around the bed and a sunken mattress. It wasn't the prettiest but a perfect fit. We also had a Sleepyhead as my very colicky dd slept better in it and had less of a problem with reflux. Both were great though only downside is you have to sit up to feed.

Next time around I'll see if we can do without the Sleepyhead.

Mummyhug · 04/12/2016 23:17

I have the next2me, it's seriously the best thing I ever bought! We had a moses basket for DD1 which she refused to sleep in and ended up in bed with us most nights. DD2 is now 6 months and still in the next2me. She sleeps wonderfully and I love that she reaches out to touch me for comfort in the night. She's a very tall baby (in 9-12 month clothes already!) and I think she's still got plenty of room in there yet. We are however thinking about bringing the cot bed into our room and removing the side and pushing up to our bed as I'd like to extend the co sleeping for a while longer yet. She's my last baby and I'm not ready to let her grow up just yet Sad

SleepForTheWeak · 05/12/2016 08:33

Fate I get what you mean about just sliding the baby over - but I never got the hang of feeding DD when lying down (and I've been feeding her for more than 2 years!!)

For those who have used a co sleeping crib (such and next 2 me and snuzpod) did your DC grow out of them before you were ready for them to be out of them? Iykwim

My biggest concern about the sleepyhead is the transition into not using it. DD was THE WORST sleeper, so unsettled, i want to try everything to avoid that this time!!

firsttimemum15 · 05/12/2016 08:46

I jad a next 2 me and used it until 8 mo. My baby isnt huge but also not tiny. Probably avg. I dont think youd get a sleepy head in snuzpod. They are long and slim. Next to me is squarer if that makes sense but my little one didnt settle in it at first and i eneded uo borrowing a moses basket.

Why not wait to see how your new baby sleeps first.

I didnt have sleepy head from.newborn but bought one now for cot as sleep went backwards. Its pricy but it helped us.

ScarletBegonia1234 · 05/12/2016 08:53

I had a snuzpod and it was great. Ds had pretty much outgrown it by 4.5 months though as he is so long! Moved onto a Troll bedside cot after that which is also great

Foxley11 · 05/12/2016 09:10

I started with a Next2Me and Sleepyhead, it worked beautifully until 5 months when my boy got so long that he'd kick the end of the crib & wake himself. We now have a Mamas & Papas cot built with one side that slides under the cot, so it's just a bigger version of the crib. Still with the Sleepyhead. I'd intended to move him into his own room at 6 months (next week) but I can't imagine sleeping without him, now.

AlfieTheRailwayCat · 05/12/2016 09:30

The sleepyhead does fit in the snuzpod, almost as if it was made to fit in there. I still do side lying feeding and then I just sit up to pop her back into the sleepyhead. Before I got it she would only sleep on me so it's been very useful! I'll worry about the transition to her big cot later.

LauraPalmersBodybag · 10/12/2016 00:32

My dd's always been on the 50th percentile. She stayed in the next2me till 7.5 months (the length was ok, buy her arms would hit the sides).

She was still in the sleepyhead until 8/9 months and I think it helped the transition to a cot as it was so familiar. Totally dreaded taking it away but was fine. She rolls around in her sleep now and wakes up but she woke lots before anyway.

GashleyCrumbTiny · 11/12/2016 18:06

I don't like our Bednest because there's a hard fold-down side - you either have to find a way to sleep on top of a metal frame or you sleep ten inches away from the side of the bed, meaning the baby is out of easy reach. It's not terrible and I have nothing else to compare it with, but, having rented it, I'd try something else another time.

YesICanHearYouClemFandango · 11/12/2016 18:18

We've got this:

www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0065HGFTW/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_ACztybYM6JWBV

DS is still in it and has plenty of room, and he's nearly 2 now. We bought it when he was 2 weeks old.

bookgirl1982 · 11/12/2016 19:37

We loved our babybay maxi with sleepyhead. Ordered from Amazon Germany for about half the price of the uk one.
