Hi all

My 14 week old daughter is entirely breastfed, and has generally been a good sleeper - 6 hour stretches common from 4 weeks old, started sleeping through at 9 weeks. BUT I have had to increase her feeds as she wasn't putting on as much weight as we would like, and since then she has got worse - now asking for feeds every 3 hours through the night.
Is this normal? Should I feed her, or be tough and settle her again without a feed? (we have tried but always cave in after 20 mins screaming!) Any thoughts would be appreciated.

josie - you sound like all of us on 'sleep is for the weak' thread. all our lo's started frequent night waking at around 4 mths. join us there for sound advice and support!

I have 4dc who were all breastfed and im sorry to say all 4 did the same thing. If shes taking a proper feed then shes hungry and theres not much you can do. If shes just sucking for comfort for a short time, try keeping the room as dark as possible, dont put the tv on, my biggest downfall, and dont change her nappy unless you have to so she gets used to "sleep time", the theory being the least stimulation the better.
When dd1 was a baby 16y ago(!!!!!) the age for weaning was 4 months and that was when she started sleeping through the night again, she was just hungry, the next 2 were the same. Dd4 has health problems associated with her weight so was put on solids at 4m under the advice of the paediatrician and a dietician at the hospital, but the general advice now is to wait to 6m of age. I can sympathise with the crying problem, but if she does not settle after 20 mins then she probably wont.
Some people try dummies or mixing bf and the bottle, but that didnt work for me. Have confidence, it will come to an end and peace will be restored, well as much as it ever is with kids!

Thanks everyone - yes she does feed each time, so I guess she needs it for now.
She did a little better last night, so perhaps it's just a phase.
