Medised or miracle???

My 5 month old dd has been really poorly for the last couple of weeks, first with a virus (temperature & rash), now with a stinking cold.

After getting up probably 8-10 times a night to her waking with blocked nose, I gave her 3ml of Medised last night and she slept all night without a single peep!

I know the box says "may cause drowsiness" but is it really that powerful? Am now feeling guilty that I have drugged the child to sleep... Or am I deluded in believing that she just slept through on her own???

...and she's starting nursery in two weeks so will most likely have a cold every blooming week!

i gave dd childrens multivits when she started private nursery and she had less colds and sniffles than most other children there???

Hi again SS. She generally seems over her cold - still a bit snotty during the day and quite a lot at night, but doesn't seem unwell in herself. Can't see any sign of teeth either.

Am frankly fed up dealing with sleep problems! Such a shock after my beautiful first born (who is now 12 incidentally) who slept through the night from 8 weeks old with no training at all.

if shes still bunged up(you prob do this already) raise her bed(put pillow under her mattres) and tuck a hankie with snuffle babe(childrens vicks) in it inside her pillow, works well for dd and it could be that shes so bunged up thats why she cant settle?

Haven't tried raising the mattress so will give that a go. She does have Olbas on a tissue near her, plus some in hot water next to her cot.

Recently only bfeeding gets her back to sleep again, but I've noticed that this actually helps clear her nose. As she's forced to breathe through her nose whilst feeding it eventually clears the blockage iykwim.

This is her first cold so have done pretty well so far - but stopping daytime bfeeding when she goes to nursery so that won't help her fight off bugs. Multivitamins a v.good idea so will give them a try.

I had exactly the same worries about excessive medised giving so spoke to my pharmacist. They said that if you are only giving 1 dose a day (as we were, at night) then you can give it for approx 10-14 nights but no more than that without a break of a week or 2.
So actually - not too bad.
We only needed it at night at the time (they were about a year old and had really bad cough and cold which affected their sleep... you know how it is when you lie down... it all gets worse)

Also had worries about excessive calpol giving - as it seems DD's both have constant colds.... but he said (and I also double checked with 2 doctors... yes that is how worried I was!) and they all said that it is out of the system in 6 hours and giving it every night if necessary for months on end isn't actually a problem. It won't do them any harm at all. I was v relieved. Although I now give it much less rarely they still (aged just 2) wake and say "Mummy, calpol" when they are poorly! bless..... am I breeding a pair of druggies?!!!

Thanks twinmumma - that's really helpful.

I decided to try and tackle the problem of her not sleeping and tonight embarked on controlled crying to get rid of the dummy. I just feel that the wretched dummy is making her congestion worse.

Anyway am on a separate thread for the cc so hopefully I can start to eliminate sleep problems one by one. At least I'll feel comfortable that if I do give her Medised its not subconciously just to get her to sleep.

Long live medised. Use it for ds (18months) and dd (8yrs). Its great stuff.

StrawberrySnowflakes · 20/02/2007 11:41

totally opposite way to your pans then but you can get dummies with a vent in which you can put vicks/snuffle babe, meaning when they inhale, the vapour helps them??just a thought
