Comfort Blanket - How to Keep Safe in Cot?

Hi All,

Our 3 month old son has a fleece that he lies on in his pram for daytime naps. He always pushes it onto his face and sucks it etc. We'd like him to have a fleece in his cot so he can use it to settle himself to sleep.
Does anyone have any advice on this? Should we tie a smallish square to the bars of his cot, or would it be safer for him to lie on it as he does in his pram. We're a bit worried he might overheat, but then the other way we're worried about him getting tangled. Either way: we're worried! He's currently just in a grobag on a sheet, nothing else in the cot.
Any opinions gratefully received!

Our DD went from having a 30cm square of silk with a cotton back under her head to stop her rubbing her hair off, to it being her inseperable 'silkie' companion. I remember posting in a similar fashion to you, worried she was going to suffocate herself as it was bigger than her face. But then I got thinking about how small it would have to be not to cover her mouth and nose and decided it was ridiculous. I took it away from her once she was asleep for a few nights then stopped being paraniod and they have been fantastic company for each other ever since. I think I decided once she had control of her hands enough to get it up to her mouth she could also get it away.

I will say the comforter relationship can be problematic as they will deliberately throw them out of the buggy, cot, onto the floor of the car etc to annoy Mum it seems. But I think it's worth the annoyance, I try to make as little fuss as possible to avoid giving her a reaction. It's such an amazing pacifyer for her when we are travelling or out, or she's with GParents etc.

With your son I'd take the chance now that he is still little to cut the big blanket into at least 6 smaller squares so you have plenty of spares. We had 6 and are now down to 3 (DD is 18mo) and I'm getting a bit scared of losing any more. 30cm isn't something he can really get wrapped around his body unlike a blanket.

DS has a taggy as his comforter and as disaterzone also says it is great for difusing difficult situations at doctors etc. He has had since he was tiny and just like your son likes to rub it on his face. They aren't particularily cheap but I think they are worth it - they are well made withstand wash after wash after wash - don't know what else to say here I just googled it and these are cheaper than I paid!

Thanks for that. Can't help being paranoid I guess! At the moment he has a muslin tied to the cot, which he pretty much ignores apart from loving the satin label

I guess we could have a small fleece square loose in the cot then. A friend made us a nice taggy, but it's not particularly soft which is what our boy seems to like.

Sorry, just realised you meant a sheep's fleece - you probably won't want to cut that up, I was picturing a 'fleece' blanket. Had some NZ friends whose daughter was permanently attached to a real fleece. It was huge and very grubby, quite revolting! But they were gypsies and so wherever they lay the fleece the little girl would happily sleep. Probably had a good build up of antibodies from it too.

No, I did mean a fake fleecy blanket. He used to lie on a proper fleece when he was smaller but not anymore. They do lok a bit grubby don't they. More for the earthmothers...

Too pricey to chop up anyway!
