are you leaving your dd / ds's windows open tonight?

This is for people in the UK which, at least as far as London goes, is very hot tonight. My dd's 20 months now so we went through the very hot summer with her last year but she was much younger and didn't notice the heat so much so we just put her to bed in a nappy and used a fan. We live by a railway line and a park so it's way too noisy to leave her windows open. This year she's too old to just go in nappy as she'll take it off and she's decided she doesn't like the noise or presence of the fan. Tonight I've put her to bed in just nappy and 0.5 tog sleeping bag, do you think that will be cool enough? Her room was pretty warm this evening, this is a warm flat in general, lots of big windows.

My ds is 18mths and has gone to bed in a nappy and vest with a sheet over him.
My Dd's have gone to bed in thin nighties and are asleep on top of their covers.
Both have windows open.

My ds is 5 1/2 months, it's 26 degrees in there!! He is wearing a nappy and is in a 1.0 tog sleeping bag, with a fan by his cot.

DD is sound asleep, but I don't know how. It was 29 in her room at 9 tonight. I've just checked, and it's "cooled down" to 28 with windows open and a fan going. Ah, the joys of a top floor, west-facing flat......!!

hurray - cooled down to 21 degrees now - quite chilly outside now

Well last night was a disaster! When I signed off here I opened dd's windows, took off her grobag and left her just in a nappy. Her room was at least 27 (my thermometer was at the top, doesn't go above 27) and her hair was very sweaty. But she couldn't sleep through all the noise so woke up every hour or so and tossed and turned until at 4am I went in, closed the window and put her fan on and she finally got some sleep until 7-ish. She's got huge dark circles under her eyes. So I'm going to go for fan and nappy tonight and see how it goes. I guess some people / kids are better at sleeping through noise than others.

strangerthanfiction - I find that the "white noise" produced by a fan at full speed blocks out most street noise that comes in from an open window. So, the best thing for us is an open window, and a fan at full speed.

It really is hot today, but the one saving grace is that there is a bit of a breeze. Yesterday was almost completely still, so felt hotter than today to me.

Have been doing up to now but this morning at 6 a.m.- despite curtains closed and nets, HUGE bee got in her room and scared dd to death!

Mum2Ela · 08/06/2004 14:27

Last night it was 33 degrees in DD's room. (21 months). Needless to say she went to bed in a nappy, blackout blind down, curtains shut, window open, a tippee of water with ice and several colf flannels covering her - literally!

It was boiling! I couldn't have slept in that heat.

strangerthanfiction · 08/06/2004 20:21

I actually don't know what the temperature is in dd's room as the thermometer doesn't go beyond 27. It's way up there at the top again tonight so have gone for nappy only, fan and open windows. She's not keen, doesn't like the noise of the fan and the noise from outside is still audible above the fan sound. I keep hearing a little voice say 'mamma, noisy, noisy,' but I'm hoping she'll drift off and over the next few weeks get used to it. Such a different story to last summer when she was much younger and would have slept through the building falling down!

Abso-bloody-lutely !

DD (22mo) has been to bed in v lightweight cotton/linen mix pj's, no covers, window open and an electric fan blowing towards her cot. I go in just before DH and I go to bed and turn the fan off, but I do leave the window ajar.

Agree with you Coddy, I can't stand to have the window closed overnight. I tend to wake up grumpy with a headache if it's shut. That's all year round btw, DH is the same.

Sorry, should read "DD (22mo) has been to bed in v lightweight cotton/linen mix pj's, no covers, window open and an electric fan blowing towards her cot, for the last couple of hot nights"
