DS is 12wks, pretty chunky (7kg) and I am sure he is ready to sleep thru from 11pm. He feeds v well in the day and goes down beautifully at 7pm, we wake him for btle feed at 10.30ish and he takes about 4oz before falling asleep again. He then wakes around 3.30/ 4 and I bf him for about 5 mins as he falls straight back to sleep, same thing happens at 5ish and 6am when I bring him into bed and try to give a big feed to start the day. Any advice on cutting out the night feeds pls? Already given him a dummy and took it away after he woke every 20mins from 2am til 5am... DD is 3.5yrs and slept through from 4 weeks, maybe this is payback time?!!

each baby is different! not about payback !

why not stop waking him for the feed at 10.30, then when he wakes in the night, he will take a bigger feed, then hopefully settle back down and wake for the first feed of the day......

imho and ahem the research 12 wks is way too early for cc.
if you want to cut out the 3.30 feed, then could you send in dh/p? do a little shushing and patting, see how that goes?

Thx, so helpful to get a bit of advice. Tried not waking him at 10.30 about 10days ago and he woke at 1 and 3, but think he could be ready to go for a bit longer now. Will give it a go, and see what happens.

yes..10 days is a long time when you are a baby.. a lot can change ! x

hermykne · 27/01/2007 13:21

ricky ticky i'd feed him, breast f mine at night til 7months 11pm or so. and bedtime was 7pm too.

12 weeks is far too young for cc, it is not recommended until at least 6 months. Cc is also designed to help with a sleep problem. I don't think your lo has a sleep problem, he needs a night feed which is not the same thing. Also, 12 weeks is still very early to sleep through, he is doing really well (just not as phenomenally quickly as your dd!). I would just carry on for a while, it's only for 5 mins and won't be for much longer if he carries on the way he is going!! Hope it all works out.

Blimey, lots of people are having this dilemma at 12 months, not 12 weeks!

He sounds like he might just be an early waker. At that age, ds used to come in bed with me from about 4am till 7 - if left in his cot he woke every 45 minutes. Not that hungry, just less sleepy and so less-inclined to sleep alone. Mind you, he'd had a feed at 10:30, 1am and at 4, too.

iwouldgoouttonight · 27/01/2007 18:59

Could you try not feeding him when he wakes at 3.30/4am and get him to sleep in other ways (shushing, swaddling, rocking, etc) - if he's only feeding for 5 mins he might not be hungry just waking out of habit. My DS did a similar thing at around 10-12 weeks and we realised he wasn't hungry so we managed to get him back to sleep without feeding, and within a week he stopped waking at all. We did keep up a 10.30 dreamfeed though until he'd got used to sleeping through few a couple of weeks.

But every baby is different, that just worked for us, but like others say he might still be hungry so you have to give a few things a try.

Thx for all your msgs. So long since I was doing this with DD, forget sometimes he is so young... will see what tonight brings...hope you and yours get a good night's kip.

I'd agree with lulumama and suggest you stop waking him for the 10.30 feed. We decided to stop that feed when DS was around 11 weeks, I think, because I wasn't happy with interrupting his sleep patterns. A couple of weeks after that he was sleeping through 7 til 7 . He was being formula fed at night though which may have made a difference. In general though, I would say it's best not to interrupt his natural sleep pattern and deal with him waking when he's ready to do so. [We've recently started giving DS a dream feed again at 11 ish though as he's needing loads more milk now he's six months and can't make it through the night without that feed at the moment ]

Gemmitygem · 28/01/2007 14:34

rickyticky, my ds is 15 weeks, and at 12 weeks he was exactly like yours. He now sleeps either through till 7 am, or at least till 5.30, when he takes 5 mins and goes straight back till 7. what I did was

a) wake him a bit later, nearer 11 pm
b) eat loads of protein/big dinner so I had loads of milk
c) keep him awake for a good hour and try and stuff him up a bit..
d) ignore him a bit if he woke at 3, and he did resettle. didn't feel bad letting him cry for say 10 mins at that time cos knew he was stuffed at midnight..
e) swaddle him after 11pm feed so he had less reason to thrash around and wake himself up..

all the best, sure he will sleep longer soon!

sorry if i'm hijacking this thread - just we're in exactly the same position, in that my ds2 has a bf dream feed at about 10.45pm in which he doesn't feed brilliantly - only taking one side and then wakes about 4am for again only one side and again at 7 for only one side. personally would much rather stuff him at 10.45 and he sleep through. can't understnd why he's not taking more at 10.45 - and would love him to drop the 4 am feed as have ds1 whos 2! any suggestions?

olivo · 02/02/2007 20:19

am reading this thread with as my dd is 5 months and still feeds at 10.30pm, 3am and 6.30am! i had just come to the conclusion that she was a poor sleeper, like her mum and dad but will try some of your tips! have to say, after this long, i've kind of got used to it!( but have invested in some fab eye cream )

good luck ricky ticky and topsy!
