Sleepy baby - is this normal or should I be worried?

I know most new mums would kill for this, but dd, 10 days, sleeps lots and has to be woken for 4 hourly feeds (expressed/formula). Ventouse delivery, jaundiced. Am I just being an ungrateful paranoid mum?

I wouldn't worry, as long as she is getting food, she obviously needs the sleep at the mo (imo). It will change! My ds (1 month) is awake for up to 2 hrs at a time, his cousin at 4 months is awake a similar time and was much sleepier when younger, every baby is different.
Make up for later by sleeping when you can now! I'll be expressing tonight so hubby can do 10.30 ish feed and I can go to bed! (haven't told him yet though)

Thanks SachaF - we had a bit of a fright yesterday when she was looking really jaundiced and wouldn't wake for a long time so the reassurance is appreciated. I'm sure it will change...

Also, I assume you have raised this with your midwife? And is your dd getting some sunshine? (eg Pram outdoors whilst hanging out the washing if you are not getting out on a daily basis for a walk?)

Yes, I did - she wasn't much help apart from saying to keep the fluids going, which we are. My new paranoia is that we're now overfeeding her... it never ends!

I had the same and I'm afraid it was a problem - took DS to the paediatrician and was told that yellowness was not jaundice but dehydration. I was waking DS for feeds but he just wasn't eating enough. Ended up with formula top-ups (which have now been able to discontinue).

But then DS was not pooing enough - if your dd is doing enough poos probably not your case.

Jaundice will do this, and it can be a viscious circle, so you are right to be concerned. With ds we fed at least every 3 hours , waking him if needs be , to try to clear it. Newborns do sleep a lot but the more alert she is in between, the more likely you are to be able to breastfeed directly and effectively.
