Moses basket to cot nightmare

DS had started sleeping fairly well in his moses basket - going 5 hours, waking for a feed, then a couple of hours more. However, at about 12 weeks he had outgrown his basket so we put him in his cot. He was in there for 2 weeks, and it was hell, just like he was a newborn again, waking every hour or more. He seemed to hate the space around him. He's now in a carrycot which we have put in the cot, and back to 5 hours then 2. Will the fact that he can see the cot bars around him mean that when we just put him straight down in the cot, he'll be used to it? Or do you think we need to persist with the sleepless nights with him just in the cot until he gets used to the space? Any comments/suggestions much appreciated!

think this shoudl work fine and he will get used to it -, I used a grobag for ds and this seemed to make hom feel secure in the cot

keep going ,when he gets used to the space it will be worth it.I use a bumper too, advice says we shouldnt, but they make a cot much more cozy, especially in winter. He'll get used to it if you persist, put him down as much as poss, even when awake, and he'll learn its his little cosy, secure place, and he has to sleep in it too.

I had this problem with my DD too when I moved her.

I bought 2 round bolster cushions from Ikea and placed them either side of her when I put her down and it worked... she slept really well.

I'm sure you could use rolled up towels or something similar.

It just snuggled the cot up a bit for her and made her feel more secure I guess.

Oh bless him,and poor you. Grobags were my solution to all sorts of things though and would always advise them. Don't know if they'll solve this problem, though the bolsters sound sort of cosy, and safer than the bumpers?

superloopy · 03/02/2007 23:49

The bolsters were only about 40cm long and I tied them to the cot bars so they wouldn't move.

I made them as secure as I could and as she couldn't roll over I felt it was safe.

She looked very cosy too!!

I've got the moises basket in the cot in preparation for cot only. It worked with dd1.
Grobags do work too...

put a cot bumper round the bottom half of the cot - it makes it seem more secure like the moses basket but as they get bigger they can see the cot bars and get used to them - this worked for our ds, and there's no danger of them overheating as the head end is still open

I used to put the moses basket into the cot. I must admit, I did keep DD in her moses basket until 6 months. She loved it so much. Grannies used to say 'you'll stunt that kid's growth ya know'!

malaleche · 04/02/2007 11:49

Yes, we had dd1 in her smaller than standard basket till she was 5.5 mths, she was sleeping with her legs bent and her head almost on one side at the end!

Daffodilly · 04/02/2007 14:50

We just moved DD over at 12 weeks. To help the transition we rolled towels up and put these under the sheet on either side of her. Seems to have worked - so far...

She looks so tiny in the big cot though!

Gemmitygem · 04/02/2007 16:01

I made a kind of circular roll out of a cotton blanket and put it round his head, about 4 inches away from his actual head, secured at the sides of the cot. prob might be a bit dangerous, but don't think so and it gave him the feel of being enclosed. then took it away once he was used to being in the cot itself..

Emprexia · 04/02/2007 16:20

I just swopped DS over from his basket to a Cotbed this last month... i can second the suggestion to use bumpers and bolsters.

I put an all-around bumper around his cotbed to enclose him a little, then used two rolled up cotbed blankets either side along the bars to shrink the space.. he sleeps fine in there now, no problems at all.

I think their sleep pattern changes around 12 weeks tbh so it may not just be the cot. i'd persist and use a sleeping bag if you don't already. because we put babies on their backs these days to reduce the risk of SIDS they wake themselves up more (eg moro reflex which they don't do on their tums). i would just persist (but I know that doesn't help much with your lack of sleep )
