hi, have 7 wk old baby girl who has always screamed as if in agony before going to sleep. Its as if she is afraid to go to sleep or is frustrated that she can't go to sleep. Day or night she will scream as if in pain before going to sleep. I know it is a 'tired' cry but feel helpless as i rock her, try to soothe her, give her a dummy but nothing works. I have tried leaving her to scream (screaming can last between 10 mins and hours!)and eventually she will fall asleep but I get so upset and as it is still continuing I am beginning to wonder if there is something seriously wrong?? Can anyone help??

When my baby used to do this, I would very gently massage her tummy indirectly by "bicycling" her legs up towards her tummy, or gently raise both legs up and down together(like you do at a nappy change), while she was lying on my lap or on a bed or a nest of blankets. It usually helped, I think! Also, try dancing around with her to some gentle dance music (anything with a nice hypnotic beat). Not to make them go to sleep, but to help relax them so they can unwind and stop crying, and them it is easier for them to fall asleep on their own. I hope you find a technique that works

hi typed a reply and then my browser shut down, grr
anyway, I really feel for you as I have been in that situation with both my sons. This drsears page is wordy but has some good ideas. My ds2 took really well to being carried around in a sling - upright and close to my chest. If I put him down, I swaddled him and made sure that his head was higher than his feet. These are all good things to do for an infant with reflux - perhaps look that up and check if your little one's symptoms seem to match. My ds1 also had colic due to a cow's milk intolerance so you could check this out too. And CRY-SIS are great, if you need someone to talk to, as all the volunteers have been through it themselves. 08451 228 669 until 10pm. I've called them myself several times.

It can be so draining, and people just don't believe you when you say how much your child screams, unless they've witnessed it firsthand.
[hugs]
I think the answer is different for each child but hope you find your solution soon.
