DS is sleeping on his tummy

Hello, have just put DS down for his lunchtime nap, have just gone to check on him and he is lying on his tummy sucking his thumb fast asleep. He is 5mths and has been rolling from back to front for a couple of weeks but today is the first time he has gone to sleep on his tummy. I am worried about this because I know that babies are meant to sleep on their backs.
At night time we tuck him in so that he can't wriggle around but during the day I don't bother (too warm). Has anyone else had this prob?
Thanks
Wellsie

I think that once they can "choose their own position" so to speak, it's better than when they're smaller.

My current problem with DS (6.5 months) is that he rolls onto his tummy (not sure if he does this when awake or asleep) and then gets cross because he doesn't like it! Got him up from his nap before and on tummy, legs out poking through bars, cross baby.....

He seems too little to be rolling over. I have just gone to check on him and he's still in the same position (1hr). I guess it will be interesting to see what happens this lunchtime as he usually wakes up very grumpy after 90mins.
Thanks
Wellsie

dd1 has slept on her tummy from almost as soon as she learned to roll over which from memory was about 4-5 months. There might have been a 2 week period when I knew she could roll one way but wasn't sure she could roll back again, so I was nervous - but the thing is she never wanted to roll back again

(in the "olden days" (OK the 70's) when I was a baby I was put to sleep on my tummy from birth because apparently I preferred it. Like M like D I guess)

OK, DS has woken up as predicted, went up to him and he had his head buried into the mattress, I quickly turned him over and have now left him on his back - I think he has gone back off to sleep, no crying.
This is why I'm worried, the little munchkin got stuck and couldn't work out how to turn over again.

DD has taken to tummy sleeping, but she is 9 months & can roll easily.

One thing I read was to put a rolled up towel along each side of the baby,to stop them rolling until they can roll back.(lot of rolls in that sentence).

The problem with sleeping on the tum, is not the rolling, its the overheating of essential organs.
DD1 was on her tummy from 7weeks, dd2 has just started to roll onto hers at 10 moinths.
Keep the room aired and cool, and don't overdress at night. Personally I prefer the sleeping bags.

DD rolled onto tummy from about 6 months. We were so paranoid we sat and turned her over every time for a few nights (!) but realised it was impossible. You can get block type things which keep them on their back or sides, but only until 6 months.

Both mine slept (when they bothered to sleep at all) on their tummies from around 4 - 5 months, as soon as they could roll over. I never bothered rolling them back as I thought that as soon as they can roll over it is ok for them to sleep that way.

as of today ds has done exactly the same thing Wellsie, I am checking on him and the window's wide open, to be honest I'm more bothered that he's suddenly become a compulsive thumb sucker!

Wellsie I think that when the baby can roll/move that SIDS advice re back to sleep is basically redundant...can't force the baby to sleep on his back if he wants to roll. 5mo is fine for rolling, not too little at all, good for him. Also by 5mo cot death is realtively unlikely as I recall. Secur, I don't think you're a bad mummy. What else can you do? DS2 (14 mo) is big on gross motor and rolled at 3 mo, by 4.5mo he was kind of wriggling up the cot (crawled at 5.5mo) so I had to let him find his own position. Now likes to sleep sort of curled up on his tummy cuddling his fleecy walk-in sleeper, aaah.
