No more soother - how long to form a habit?

My 22-month old has surprised us by dropping his soother for sleep. We had been working on eliminating its daytime use, which was going well, and two nights ago, he bit through the only soother in the house. We were stunned when he actually slept the night through regardless. This is now night 3 without it (hasn't had it for naps either). Is it too early to celebrate? Do you think is the habit established? Are we soother-free?

I will be thrilled if it is gone. My nieces and nephews fiercely held on to theirs til well after two, so I was expecting an all-out war at some stage.

I'm mainly asking as he is a little unwell tonight with bad nappy rash and I wonder if I would be back at square one if I reintroduce it if I feel he needs it. He is thankfully sleeping now but if he does wake upset, would I be foolish to give it to him? Is the two-and-a-half nights without it enough for a good habit to bed down?

I remember reading somewhere that it would take a week for this to become the new normal. I stopped giving my toddler a dummy at bedtime two weeks ago. He asked about it once, but now seems to have forgotten.

Thank you. It is a tough choice to make - we were absolutely stunned when he simply did it of his own volition. Hope your child is doing well without it!

Good news was that he slept right through again without it and without the bad nappy rash disturbing him. Hopefully the skin heals quickly and that we have seen the last of the soother. I simply can't believe our luck if it goes as easily as this - I was genuinely steeling up for days and nights of all-out tears and was therefore putting off removing it as long as possible.

We had recently been having a nightmare with our 6mo DDs sleep, with 2-3h screaming sessions at 1am, fighting with her spitting out her dummy but wanting to suck. Anyway, we decided to start sleep training to loose the dummy and to my total surprise she has been sleeping so much better without it. I had expected a battle but I think it was maybe her way of telling me that she had had enough of the dummy. I hope it continues!
