Grobag? But her hands get so cold!!

My 7 week old dd has just reached 10lb and I have started to put her in a grobag. I have followed the instructions and according to the thermometer (in the packet) I put her in a bodysuit and sleepsuit before putting her into a quilted babygro.
The problem I have is her hands get cold. The last couple of mornings she has woken at 4.30am when she had been asleep til nearly 6 and I think it is because she is cold. She doesn't feed for very long before going back to sleep.
Previously I was swaddling her in a cotton cellular blanket and tucking her in with another, she was also wearing a thicker quilted sleepsuit.
Does anyone have any experience of this or any ideas? Otherwise I'll put her back in the blankets till she is older.

Yes, it's fine. I had the same problem but it's normal and to be expected. There is a previous thread on this somewhere i'll find for yopu.

You can feed babies when there asleep if you're b/f. I did it with DS1 but DS2 slept through so didn't need to with him.

Ditto it's normal for cold hands. Try not to worry to much as my two would often wriggle out of their blankets and they were ok. It's normal for them to wake at that age too.

Hi Mrs.Doolittle! My ds also gets cold hands every now and then, unswaddled or in a grobag. What I mean is once you stop full swaddling their arms are always out in the open, they don't know how to tuck them in. I didn't worry about it but did the 'back of the neck' test to make sure he was warm himself. I must admit I chop and change his clothes every night depending on what the forecast is supposed to be. Try her again tonight in what she's been wearing the last few nigths and do the neck test. If she feels cool to you then put her in a thicker sleepsuit or add a thin sheet on top of her. [Lots of people say you don't need to do this but I found I have to with ds as he feels the cold so easily, but this was when he was about 5mo and able to push it off if need be] But as Twiglett says it's better for them to be too cold than too warm.

They come into a light sleep around 4:30, could the light be bothering her (assuming it's light at that time, I know it is at 5am here!) or has she gone straight from a full swaddle to the grobag? She may not be used to her arms being out and about?

I was reading the other thread on summertime waking and I wonder if this is what it is coinciding with me putting her in a grobag.
I don't mind feeding her, that's not a problem. It's just I thought she was awake but not because hungry but because she was cold.
If its okay that her hands are cold - the rest of her isn't -I'll carry on. It must be just the summertime!
She's fast asleep now though

Thank you ladies!!

Also, if you don't think she needs this feed anymore you could offer her water or a cuddle or a 'white noise' sound to help her off again.

Dd always had cold little hands at that age. From what you've described, she's pretty well wrapped for this time of year so I'd doubt she's really cold. I put my dd into a grobag at around 8 weeks and she's still in one now at 19 months. I think they're absolutely fantastic.

popsycal · 02/06/2004 11:43

Ds used to have this but he was even older than your dd when he went in a grobag - we sometimes used to put little scratch mits on him for bed.

At 22 months he is still in his grobag and does not sleep so well without it. They are brilliant!

MrsDoolittle · 02/06/2004 12:04

What's a 'white noise' ??????????????

wobblyknicks · 02/06/2004 12:06

Background type noises - such as a washing machine.

MrsDoolittle · 02/06/2004 12:11

ohhhh I seeee. It is true, she falls asleep to the washing machine on high spin and always the hoover!!! Bit difficult at 4am though. I hadn't thought of water - I thought it was discouraged for bf babies???
(I have had very heated discussion with dm on this subject!! Should I feel guilty?)

DS went into a grobag at about the same age as your DD and he used to wear scratch mittens as I got worried about cold hands. He definitely sleeps MUCH better in his grobag.

He is also bf and it's only since starting solids that I've started to give him water - if he wakes in the night (which only happens occasionally now) I'll bf him. I think that until solids start, bf babies don't need water; the milk adjusts itself so they get what they need.

Also DS doesn't like bottles and so if I presented him with a bottle in the middle of the night he would not be impressed

karen99 · 02/06/2004 19:36

Sorry MrsD, forgot dd was bf. I didn't give any water until solids at 4.5mo too and he went straight onto a spouted cup (prev excl bf). We recorded the hair drier onto the pc and created a 10min file which we then copied onto cd. We were already woken by his middle of the night crying so we'd take it in turns putting the cd on and it would turn itself off after 10mins. I think ds dropped to two night feeds around 4mo and then to one after solids and then a week later to nothing so the fact your dd is sleeping through for so many hours is great. Boob is definitely best if it's not affecting her morning feed. Hope tonight is better for you.

MrsDoolittle · 03/06/2004 13:52

We had a much better night last night - Thank you Karen
