Just out of interest really.

DS is 23 weeks and feeds at 7.30pm, 12pm and then wakes at 3/4am. He settles ok after the 12 feed and if he wakes at 2am or 5am will settle after a feed but for some reason if he wakes between 3 and 4am I cannot get him to settle back to sleep in his cot after a feed(even after 3 attempts at him falling asleep on my lap) it means that I bring him into bed and feed him and he drops straight to sleep as long as hes next to me.
Ideally I want him to settle back down after his feed.

Im just curious as to if anyone else had a similar thing as it seems strange why its only a problem if he wakes 3/4 am.

I have a similar thing, though I am v v lazy and just let DD ( 5 Months) sleep with me when she wakes up.

There is a thing with 3/4 am where it is the body's low point. It is when your breathing is worst if you are asthmatic, and that kind of thing. Whether that is relevent will probably be shot out of the water by subsequent posts.

kbaby, i can't say why your baby won't settle at 3/4 am. fascinating thing about asthmatics, greenmum. apparently, at that time your body temp also is at its lowest too. all about how we evolved?

All mine did this - in fact DD still does it, but as she's 3 it's not a problem as such as she just gets up and comes into bed without disturbing me. It was my childrens habit of doing this that made me put them into beds at an early age so I wouldn't have to get up and get them

Not sure why your baby won't sleep between 3-4 either, but if mine wakes after 4 she will only go back to sleep if next to me. The "low point" is due to a fall in cortisol levels, a "stress" hormone which you need to be able to function properly. This then begins to rise during subsequent hours when it stays at a fairly steady rate for the rest of the day, dipping again at night following the onset of sleep. This is why asthmatics sometimes can have worsening of their symptoms due to the "early morning dip". You can have individual variations throughout the day, but generally most people follow this pattern.

yes but mines 21 months

Tommy · 12/01/2007 10:07

yes....mine's 3.5

LittleSarah · 12/01/2007 10:09

Yes, mine is 2.8.

But then I have not actually tried making her go back to her own bed, I can't be bothered getting up!

She is in a good spell at the moment but next time I am going to try and put her back to bed!

hi
my ds is five now and would never sleep in his own bed until about a year ago, we had to get hi to sleep in our bed and transfer him to his own

but after i had dd we left him to cry etc and now he's really good....
except that at about 3am he come and gets in our bed

am just hoping he will grow out of it (i mean when he's sixteen what will they say at school?)

plasmon · 12/01/2007 10:32

Hi there my 13 months old does the same, it's driving me insane because I can't let her scream her head off can I? But at the same time I need a good night sleep. Hopefully someone will have a good answer to this...

amijee · 12/01/2007 14:57

hi kbaby

I think we have a very similar baby where it comes to sleep! My 5.5 mth ds does this and I resort to co sleeping when he just won't settle in his cot which can be any time from 3am onwards.

I always assumed that he was in a much lighter sleep after approx 6 hrs sleep ( not straight thru mind!) because the times he is unsettled vary with what time I put him to sleep.

What time do you put yours to bed and wake up?

kbaby · 12/01/2007 16:56

hi, he goes anywhere from 7-8pm then wakes at 12ish but settles with a feed until 3am, i guess thats 7hrs sleep by then. wish we could lose the 12pm waking

My ds does this too he is 15 months old and it's driving me insane because he kicks and punches and headbutts us for the rest of the night. I am sure he does not mean to inflict pain on us but that doesn't help much.

Jelley · 12/01/2007 17:23

My ds is 11 months and does the same thing. I clicked on this thread hoping someone had a solution, only to find there are lots of us with the same problem and no solution.
