are travel cribs safe for new baby for extended period of time? Help!

I'm due no.2 in 7 weeks and having a bit of a dilema. About 3 months after baby arrives we're moving country - this will involve a stay at the IL's for a few weeks, then a move to America. Baby will be about 5 months by the time we get to the States.

I was thinking about getting either one of those Samsonite pop-up travel cribs or a baby dux one for the baby to use from birth. I just feel that this would be practical and would keep the baby feeling as settled as possible during all the moving upheaveal not to have to keep changing where s/he is sleeping. If I bought the Samsonite one I'd buy a stand for it, the baby dux one comes with a stand.

Is it alright to use one of these cribs for that long? I have a travel cot that we occasionally used for ds but it's enormous and heavy and not practical. Are there any issues regarding baby develpment or safety?

Any advice would be helpful.... thanks.

I think so long as it has a proper ventiliated mattress it'll be ok - I'm not sure whether either of the ones you fancy do (though the Baby Dux one looks very cool - hadn't seen that one before).

I'm not sure the Samsonite one would work on a stand though - I don't think it has a solid base.

i had a samsonite one and i wouldn't recommend using it for extended periods as the mattress is quite thin. also i can't see how it would work on a stand. a moses basket should be ok until about 4 months - depending on how long the baby is.

interested to see the baby dux one - can you send me a link?

I think you're over-emphasising how much upheaval a tiny baby will feel. 3 months is about how long they stay in a moses basket in any case...

that's good to know about the Samsonite crib, that it's base is soft and won't go on a stand. thanks!

I can't do a link at the moment, twickersmum, I just googled it and it came up on a few different websites and ebay. It does look pretty good, but I'd be interested to hear other people's experience of it too.

Kif, I had real problems getting ds to sleep in different places so wanted to avoid that this time. The baby dux is supposed to be useable until baby can kneel and pull itself up..just thought it might be an idea...

Samonsite matress is really thin - depending on what you're going to put it onto I'd defn look at more padding - eg towels under it. I was told by someone in John Lewis that technically, they recommend not sleeping babies in travel cots for too long as the mattresses don't have as much padding - eg danger of encouraging plagiocephaly (flat head). That's normal travel cots, though...

travel cots are only advised to be for occasional use. Re: the samsonite pop up one - if you buy the small one from kiddicare it comes with a bonus pack worth £25 which includes a proper foam mattress to fit it (the one it comes with is very soft and would not offer very much support).

I have just checked their website and they only have pink ones left (not good if you have a boy!!)

An alternative would be to use a carry cot for your lo.
