sleepy baby - napaholic

my 18wk DD1 is a good sleeper, but if i leave her on her playmat for longer than 20mins i'll find her sucking her fingers and going off to sleep. this is only 45mins after having a nap. she's having regular naps - 1 in the morning, big 2.5hour in the middle of the day, then another in the afternoon. she sleeps from 7pm-10pm, then 11pm through till 7am, but lately has been waking up to play at 3am but goes back to sleep very quickly.

i'm feeding her 6fl oz 5 times a day. she's a big baby - haven't had her weighed for a month but she is definitely over 16lb. she's really active and is constantly on the move and making loads of noise. can only think that she's wearing herself out or that i'm underfeeding her?
any thoughts?

Sorry can't help except to say I'd kill to have a baby like yours. Bumping for others.

PinkTulips · 06/01/2007 14:22

am writhing in here. not much help to you i'm afraid!

loopylopey · 06/01/2007 15:06

i know it sounds stupid, but i am just worried she's bored so she falls asleep.

loopey, have started a thread on something similar today - friends babies seem to be able to stay awake where as my DD (17 weeks nearly) struggles to stay awake, is on her 3rd big nap today, and like your DD she does sleep well (7-6ish) but she too has started waking wanting to play at 4.30 lovely posters told me it was normal and as our DD's are the same age it's likely it's developmental (she says hoping)

loopylopey · 06/01/2007 18:10

thanks justjam - i was wondering whether it was time to try some baby rice... but then she's not crying for food at 3am, and doesn't seem more ravenous than normal...so maybe not...
we have just moved house (4 days ago) so i guess that could explain it, or like you say, just developmental!

is your DD really active in her wake time? mine never stays still or quiet so i reckon that it must really tire her out. in fact, she's just gone down to sleep for the night at 6.15pm!! we couldn't keep her awake any longer! i'm not complaining just can't believe it!

how weird loopy - just had to put DD down as well! I said to DH at this rate she'll be in bed by 5 every night!! I do worry that a lot of sleep in the day will cut into her night sleep (do you?) but on the other hand if they don't get enough sleep it has the same effect
DD isn't draining her bottles so I know she doesn't need rice...(am glad really as don't want to start weaning till she's 6 months) and she is a good weight (over 16lbs) so It's not like she needs filling out Is she active??? sort of, If she's on the floor she chats away and kicks about lots but if she's in her bouncy chair she just plays with her hands and amuses herself so not over active....we will have to stay in tpuch with progress reports

fizzbuzz · 06/01/2007 19:16

My dd did this at 19 weeks, it lasted for about 10 days and then stopped. Now sleeps from 7.30-7.30. Watch it all change now I've posted this, which is EXACTLY what happened last time I posted about her!

justJAM · 06/01/2007 19:27

hi fizz - long time no speak! did/does your DD nap lot's in the day?

fizzbuzz · 06/01/2007 19:37

Depends on her mood.....still not best daytime napper.....usually
1-11/2 hours morning
1 1/2-2 hours afternoon
45 mins early eve.

However usually she is completely random like today..45 mins morning, 1 1/2 hours midday, 2 hours late afternoon.

The only constant thing about her is her inconsistancy.

Sometimes she will sleep all day and all night. Have to say when she started the 4.30am business, we were very slow to cotton on. At first she seemed as if she wanted to play, but after about a week of this realised she was hungry, so fed her, and then switched to hungrier baby formula which stopped 4.00 am business.

She will now of course start waking at 4.00am again, purely becuase I have written this!

justJAM · 06/01/2007 19:46

Think positive Fizz!!! Thing is DD doesn't seem hungry, even If I pop the dummy in (like this morning) at 4.30 so she drops back off, she still left leaves some (if not quite a bit) of her morning bottle at 6.45???
When she has woken in the past with hunger around 4, say if she is having a growth spurt, she will cry for food and drain the bottle.
Sooooooo confused - am off now but thanks for the post

fizzbuzz · 06/01/2007 19:50

Dd never has much bottle in morning and neither did ds, not even when they has slept all night.

How difficult is it to get her back to sleep at 4.00am?

justJAM · 07/01/2007 16:05

luckily (so far hope I don't jinx myself here) she goes back off ok....it seems at the moment that discovering the world around her, mostly her hands, is far more interesting than eating or sleeping...she has hardly slept today (and there's me posting on a napaholic thread ) is just laying in her cot chatting away and playing with her hands......the same when feeding starts off fine then gets bored in 2 seconds, and I end up following her mouth around with the bottle while she takes bits here and there...they just love to keep us on our toes

loopylopey · 07/01/2007 18:40

yep, i think we have jinxed ourselves. mine has hardly slept at all today! only 3 hours in total! have put her down in her cot as she's been up for 3 hours and is in a tired trance, but she's in there swivelling around and sucking her index finger! hope you all have a good night.

Hi loopy - how was your DD last night? My DD had to go to bed at 6.30 as she was soooo tired. Thankfully has napped a bit better today, I just need to work on extending them rather than her sleeping an hour on an hour off all day

fizzbuzz · 08/01/2007 15:14

justJam, have given up on extending dd's naps and now just go with flow.....somedays she will have 1 1/2 hours all day and will become Grizelda.

Other days like to day, had an hour nap am , and STILL asleep now after going down at midday.

Aren't girls meant to be contrary? If not, she is doing a pretty good impression of it.

justJAM · 08/01/2007 16:00

lol!!! v true fizz....DD is that

REIDnotREEDorREAD · 08/01/2007 16:14

my ds went through a phase of waking at 4am after being a great sleeper, the advice i got was to make sure the room is absolutely pitch black. (we used to used a nightlight and leave the bathroom light on with nursery door left ajar) we got rid of all light and voila (sp?) he slept through again!

justJAM · 08/01/2007 16:26

reidie!!! have you gone back to work yet??

justJAM · 08/01/2007 16:26
REIDnotREEDorREAD · 08/01/2007 16:35

yes today work was fine, mil however... pain in the a*

justJAM · 08/01/2007 16:37

oh for you - I won't be in the bar till later in the week - but hopefully I'll see you there soon and you can fill me in then

loopylopey · 08/01/2007 17:25

justjam - hi, she was good last night, went at 6pm ish, stayed down until we woke her at 10pm for a feed then back down at 11pm until 6am. starts her birdsong squealing at 6am, and we try and ignore for as long as possible but givve in at 6.15am and accept that the day has started!!!
she's had a big 3 hour nap today along with 2 mini 45minuters but is grumpy, just about to have a bath with her now. hope you had a good night - have a good one tonight! think it won't be long before my grumpster goes down! x
